Visiting Dotonbori, the beating heart of Osaka
Located in the Namba district, Dotonbori serves as one of the most energetic hubs in Osaka. Known for its massive illuminated signs and nightlife, the area draws a steady mix of travelers and locals. The neighborhood centers around a canal and packs in restaurants, bars, and shops, acting as a definitive showcase of urban life in Japan.

Dotonbori is famous for its towering, light-up billboards. The most recognizable is the Glico Man, a giant display of a runner mid-stride. After dark, the streets come alive with LED screens, vibrant neon, and thick crowds that create a high-energy atmosphere. The scene stays active deep into the night, especially on weekends.
Local culinary specialties
Osaka has a reputation for street food, and Dotonbori is the best place to experience it. You will find numerous stalls serving takoyaki, which are octopus-filled dough balls, as well as okonomiyaki, a savory pancake layered with cabbage and meat. Several well-known restaurants, such as Kani Doraku with its iconic mechanical crab sign on the exterior, are go-to spots for seafood lovers.

My friends and I totally fell in love with the Dotonbori neighborhood in Osaka. After an exhausting day in Himeji, I only wanted one thing, which was to kick back. Instead, I got swept up in a whirlwind of giant, glowing screens like in New York, an abundance of restaurants with funny signs, dance bars, and crazy shops. A real treat for the senses!
I recommend the Ferris wheel for a great overall view. The boat tour is a bit of a tourist trap.
