Visiting the National Library of France - Richelieu
The National Library of France - Richelieu is a landmark of culture and intellectual history in France. Located in the heart of the 2nd arrondissement of Paris, this historic library serves as both an architectural treasure and a center for knowledge preservation.
Remarkable neoclassical architecture
Housed in a 17th century building, the Richelieu library draws visitors in with its elegant design and deep history. The Labrouste reading room, carefully restored, is a masterpiece in its own right. Its glass dome and slender cast iron columns create a bright, airy atmosphere suited for study and reflection. Visitors can also explore the galleries, ceiling murals, and various collections displayed within this prestigious setting.
Collections of unparalleled depth
The National Library of France - Richelieu holds some of the most precious items in global heritage. Rare manuscripts, prints, antique maps, musical scores, and historical documents are meticulously preserved here. The Manuscripts Department and the Department of Coins, Medals and Antiques make this a primary research site for scholars, while the rarity and beauty of these pieces captivate casual visitors as well.
An enriching experience
Open to the general public since its renovation, the Richelieu library offers a museum route accessible to all, providing a window into the history of its vast collections. Temporary exhibitions are hosted regularly, lending a contemporary dimension to this space steeped in history.
If you want to slip away for a day into a mysterious place, or if you love the light or dark academia aesthetic, this place is for you! I loved coming to sit in the Oval Room. This beautiful relaxation space is free and, most importantly, very bright. Do not miss the museum. It holds some extremely rare treasures!
