What to know about Peñón Blanco Beach

A preserved beach in the heart of nature

Located within the famous Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park in Andalusia, Spain, Peñón Blanco Beach is a stretch of golden sand framed by rock formations typical of the region. Its name translates to white rock, a reference to the large limestone block that stands near the shoreline and acts as a distinct visual landmark. Quieter than other beaches in the park, it appeals to those seeking a natural and relatively undeveloped setting.

What to do at Peñón Blanco Beach?

Swimming is the main draw here. The clear, shallow waters are ideal for cooling off, though the sea can occasionally get choppy depending on the wind. Snorkeling enthusiasts will find areas to explore, though the marine life is less dense here than in some of the park's other coves. A short walk along the shore highlights the contrast between the golden sand, the white rocks, and the bright colors of the sea.

A popular, but manageable spot

Peñón Blanco Beach is not the most famous destination in the park, but it works well for anyone looking for a quiet beach to escape the summer crowds. On weekdays, the atmosphere is peaceful, though weekends can draw local families. It is not the most dramatic spot in the park, but its understated charm and natural surroundings make it a pleasant stop if you are in the Níjar area.

Really nice

Following Bill's advice (thanks!), I checked out this beach, and I approve!
Sand for tanning, swimming in peace, and a rocky area to see some fish. There is even a shower, which is rare around here! Parking is nearby, and it's easy to access.

My favorite beach in Cabo de Gata

Why this is my favorite beach in this nature reserve:

- Easily accessible, the parking lot is not far away
- A shower to rinse off, which is rare in this area
- Pretty coastline, especially with Isleta del Moro right next door, an islet and an observation deck with a panoramic view
- Above all: tons of fish to see while snorkeling near Isleta del Moro, actually.
- A really nice restaurant to try, with good paellas right above the beach: La Ola
