What to know about Playa de Las Negras
An atypical beach in the heart of Cabo de Gata
Located within the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park in Spain, Playa de Las Negras stands out for its laid-back vibe and unique setting. Bordered by the village of the same name, this pebble and dark sand beach takes its name from the volcanic formations that define the region. It is framed by rocky cliffs and arid hills, offering a panorama characteristic of the landscapes found in this part of Europe.
A preserved natural environment
Playa de Las Negras stretches for several hundred meters and offers an unobstructed view of the Mediterranean Sea. Unlike heavily touristed beaches, it maintains a peaceful atmosphere that suits those seeking quiet. The calm, clear waters are well-suited for swimming, though water shoes are recommended for comfort on the pebbles.
Activities around the beach
The surroundings of Playa de Las Negras are full of opportunities for outdoor activity. The beach serves as a popular starting point for kayaking or paddleboarding excursions, allowing you to explore nearby coves and dramatic cliffs. Snorkeling enthusiasts will also find plenty to see thanks to the rich marine life in the seabed. For hikers, trails lead to isolated spots like the famous Cala de San Pedro, which is accessible only by foot or by boat.
A charming village nearby
The village of Las Negras, adjacent to the beach, adds to the local appeal. With its white houses, seaside restaurants, and small shops, it invites you to wander and sample local specialties. The sunset, visible from the beach or a terrace, completes the experience with dramatic colors cast over the water and the surrounding mountains.
Just another beach in Cabo de Gata.
Not the most charming, and there are quite a few boats parked on part of the beach (so I always have doubts about the cleanliness of the water when the beach also serves as a dock).
Basically, there are better spots in the area!
