The authentic charm of Le Grand-Bornand

Le Grand-Bornand sits in the heart of the French Alps, operating as a mountain destination that balances tradition with modern comfort. Located in the Haute-Savoie department, this year-round base attracts visitors with its preserved character and mountain scenery. It is recognized by Avygeo as one of the best family-friendly mountain resorts.

In winter

During the winter, Le Grand-Bornand becomes a snowy playground for winter sports enthusiasts. The terrain offers varied runs for skiers of all levels. Beyond downhill skiing, visitors can try snowboarding, cross-country skiing, or snowshoeing to explore the local trails. The resort maintains its architectural heritage, featuring traditional wooden chalets that blend into the landscape.

The ski area includes:

  • 90km of trails
  • 47 runs for all skill levels
  • 24 ski lifts
  • 1000m to 2100m in altitude

In summer

In the summer, Le Grand-Bornand shifts to green pastures, providing terrain for hiking and cycling. Marked paths allow nature lovers to spot local flora and fauna against the backdrop of the alpine peaks. Those interested in rock climbing can access the surrounding limestone faces.

Local heritage

Beyond outdoor activities, Le Grand-Bornand offers an authentic experience in its historic center, Grand Bornand Village, situated at an altitude of 1000m. The cobblestone streets, craft shops, and traditional restaurants highlight the regional culture. Local food remains a focus, particularly reblochon, the iconic cheese of the Savoie region.

Very pretty

For my part, I went to Grand Bornand out of season and I found the resort very pleasant. It is a place that stays lively all year round. If you want to enjoy the mountains in the spring or summer, it is a great starting point. Even when you are not skiing, it is super.

Le Grand-Bornand, between traditions and activities

Le Grand-Bornand is nestled at the end of the valley, right at the foot of the Aravis mountains, and the view of the range is unbeatable. From the end of the Bouchet valley all the way to the peaks of Chinaillon, life in Le Grand-Bornand is super pleasant. It is not just a ski resort, but a place that stays lively all year round. The capital of farmhouse reblochon cheese has done a great job preserving its heritage, so you will not find high-rise buildings here, just traditional wooden-shingle chalets. For families, take note of the Bonheur des Mômes festival at the end of August, Glisse en Coeur, and many other events like the biathlon World Cup.

Good, but the service needs work

Nice setting, with some really pretty views of the mountains. The slopes up top (Chinaillon) are good, but down in the village, meh.
One thing that’s a bit annoying, and kind of ruins the experience, is the systematic photo check of your lift pass at the lifts.
