Visiting Purity Beach

Down in the heel of the Italian boot, Gallipoli is far from a mere pebble, it is a true gem. Set in the heart of the Salento peninsula in the southeastern Puglia region, this port city balances historic architecture with a lively Mediterranean spirit. Bordered by the Ionian Sea, it is a primary destination for beach seekers. The coastline here is defined by fine sand and clear water, and within this bright landscape, Purity Beach stands out for its location right in the historic center. The old town sits on its own island, connected to the mainland by an ancient drawbridge, a short walk that transports you into a unique setting.

A beach at the foot of the ramparts

On its limestone island, Città Bella, the old town of Gallipoli, is encircled by defensive walls. You enter a space that feels detached from the modern world, filled with notable monuments, narrow alleys, and a castle. This is where Purity Beach provides an unexpected seaside retreat. The beach is compact, stretching no more than 250 meters, but it is free to access and easily reachable on foot. Its clear waters are characteristic of Puglia, and the fine sand offers a quiet spot magnified by its atypical position right against the ramparts. The view is exceptional, ranking among the most famous in the city, especially during sunset. From the sand, you can also see the island of Sant'Andrea and its lighthouse. As one of the oldest beaches in Gallipoli, it has a long history, including small stilt structures built to accommodate visitors in the 1960s. The beach owes its name to legends associated with Saint Agatha, the patron saint of the city, who is said to have had a relic recovered on this very site. It is a local landmark.

Easy to access and pleasant

For a beach that is easily accessible because it is right next to the old town of Gallipoli, I think it is very good. Given its location, it is crowded, and there is concrete and a few buildings that spoil the view a bit, but on the sea side, the panorama is fairly open, and the colors are splendid.
The beach includes areas of fine sand and some rocky reefs. This creates pretty color contrasts between the turquoise and the navy blue. The waters are calm and warm, making for pleasant and safe swimming for young children.
