Where to stay near Arenal Volcano National Park: the 3 areas to know in 2026
Our two members describe the same spectacle, and that spectacle no longer exists. « The lucky ones might be able to see red lava flowing down its sides », writes the first; « sometimes during eruptions, orange lava shoots out and flows down the hillsides! », adds the second. Arenal's continuous eruptive activity began in 1968 and ended in December 2010: since then, no visible flow and no ash, but a cone still monitored, with its fumaroles and its seismicity. Coming for the lava means coming fifteen years too late.
What is left is what decides the night, and our first member names it: « just lounge in the hot springs in La Fortuna ». They are strung along the road that leaves the village westwards, between 4.8 and 11.2 kilometres out. Three areas share the nights: La Fortuna and its shops, the hot springs road, and El Castillo, 24.8 kilometres away by the south shore of the lake.

The two ways to stay near Arenal Volcano National Park
The volcano has thrown out nothing since 2010: the choice is therefore not about a spectacle to catch, but about hot water, where you eat at night and the minutes on the road.

Anyone who wants to walk to dinner
Three thousand and ten inhabitants, one square, excursion agencies on every corner and restaurants you reach on foot: this is the base of almost every stay in the area. The summit is 8.2 kilometres and seventeen minutes away, the waterfall 5.5 kilometres and eleven minutes, and the hot springs start at 4.8 kilometres. It is possible to do plenty of activities like rafting, canyoning, mountain biking, horseback riding, hiking, etc.

8.5 across more than 50 reviews and a location rated 9.5: in the heart of the village, with a pool, for anyone who wants to do everything on foot.
Hotel Las Colinas Budget
Location rated 9.2, right in the centre: two readings on the same day gave two overall scores too far apart, and neither is served here.
Pros

- The long-distance buses stop here
Cons

The hot springs road, west of the village Between 4.8 and 11.2 kilometres, on the volcano road
Anyone here for the hot water as much as for the cone
This is the area our first member describes without placing it: the hot springs are strung along the road that runs from the village to the volcano, from Baldi at 4.8 kilometres to Tabacón at 11.2. The three addresses here have their own thermal pool, and they are the best rated in this guide: 9.3, 9.3 and 8.8. The summit stands opposite, and this is also the area where the cone can be seen from the room, « without any clouds » on a lucky day, as our second member puts it.
If you are lucky enough to see this perfect cone without any clouds, you will have a memory that lasts a lifetime.

Anyone who wants the volcano without the agencies or the crowd
A hamlet on the lakeshore, at the end of a dirt road that skirts the volcano to the south: thirty-eight minutes from La Fortuna, which means more than an hour of driving on every day of visits. What those minutes buy is the silence, the head-on view of the cone and the complete absence of excursion shops. What they cost: the restaurants, the buses and being close to the springs.

Our tips for booking the right place
- The volcano has been dormant since 2010, and that is the first thing to know: Arenal's continuous eruptive activity began in 1968 and ended in December 2010. Since then, the three sources we read on the same day say the same thing: a resting phase, no visible lava flow, no ash emission, but a volcano still classified as active, monitored, with its fumaroles and its seismicity. Our two members write, however, one that « the lucky ones might be able to see red lava flowing down its sides », the other that « sometimes during eruptions, orange lava shoots out ». They are describing the volcano of before, the one whose reputation travelled through the guidebooks. What is left lies elsewhere: the shape of the cone, which our second member finds unforgettable « without any clouds », and the slopes « covered in dried black lava », a description that gets nothing wrong.
- Hot water has replaced the lava, and it lines up over six kilometres: « Just lounge in the hot springs in La Fortuna »: what our first member lists among the activities has become the main reason to sleep here rather than drive through. The thermal establishments are strung along the road that leaves the village for the volcano: the Baldi springs at 4.8 kilometres and six minutes, those of Tabacón at 11.2 kilometres and fourteen minutes, and several hotels in between with a pool of their own. Sleeping in this area avoids the double bill: otherwise the entry to the public baths is added to the price of the room.
- What the park costs, and what you see there: The national park is open from 8am to 4pm, and entry costs $16.95* per non-resident adult and $5.65* per child, two figures that agree across the two sources read on the same day. You walk there on short trails crossing the old lava fields, at the foot of the cone; the lengths given vary from one source to the next, so this guide does not put a number on them. Our second member sums up what you take away: « hikes between the fumaroles and jungle sightseeing are all part of the experience! »
- The cone hides, and that is the real lottery of the stay: « If you are lucky enough to see this perfect cone without any clouds, you will have a memory that lasts a lifetime », writes our second member, and the important word is « lucky ». The summit rises into a near-permanent cloud zone, and a two-night stay multiplies the chances that a one-night stay does not offer. This is what weighs most heavily in favour of the springs area or the village rather than El Castillo: you look at the cone several times a day, without having to drive between two glances. Our first member sets down a reservation nobody else writes: « with its characteristic conical shape, the Arenal volcano is not quite as beautiful as Poas ».
- Coming to see lava: there has been none on the surface since December 2010.
- Counting on a single night to see the cone: it hides in the clouds most of the time.
- Planning the park after 4pm: that is when it closes.
- Sleeping in El Castillo without counting the road: thirty-eight minutes from the village, so seventy-six on a day of visits.
