What to know about Barra da Lagoa Beach
On the eastern side of the island of Florianópolis, Barra da Lagoa Beach is favored for its fishing village vibe, long sandy stretches, and waters suitable for both swimming and surfing. It is a popular spot without being over-the-top, frequented by locals and travelers alike who are looking for a laid-back corner of Brazil.
A lively beach without the crowds
Barra da Lagoa Beach stretches for several kilometers, with a sea that is generally calm in the summer. It is a family-friendly beach where children can play in the water safely. Further north, the waves become more consistent, attracting surf schools and beginners. Even during peak season, the atmosphere remains relaxed. You will find street vendors, a few simple bars right on the sand, and plenty of room to set up your towel without needing to fight for space.
A village with a slow pace
The heart of Barra da Lagoa Beach retains a genuine local identity. You can still see fishermen returning in the late morning, boats moored in the small canal that cuts through the village, and modest, colorful houses. The suspension bridge connecting the two banks leads to a small path heading toward the Piscine Naturelle (Natural Pool), a rocky formation popular for swimming. In the narrow streets, a few restaurants serve grilled fish or local dishes from Santa Catarina for around 50 to 90 BRL (about $10 to $18).
An ideal base for exploring
Barra da Lagoa Beach is well-positioned for exploring the eastern coast of the island. You can walk to Moçambique Beach, which is much wilder, or head out on a hike toward Praia da Galheta, which is accessible only on foot. Some travelers choose to stay here for a few days to enjoy a slower pace, far from the bustle of downtown Florianópolis. In the late afternoon, the sunsets over the surrounding hills give the area a peaceful, almost timeless atmosphere.
Barra da Lagoa is known as a very beautiful and authentic beach. This fishing village is located on the east coast of Santa Catarina, about 20 km from Florianopolis. What makes it special is that it sits right at the mouth of the channel from the Lagoa da Conceição. It is such a charming and peaceful beach. You can go swimming in its natural pool or try stand-up paddleboarding near the channel, and then go surfing a bit further down on the exposed part of the beach.
