Visiting Belluno Dolomites National Park

Belluno Dolomites National Park is part of the Dolomites mountain range in the Veneto region of northern Italy, a site designated as a UNESCO World Heritage area in 2009. This protected natural zone has been managed since 1988 and spans over 310 square kilometers. Roughly 150 species of flora and fauna are endemic to this territory. You will find chamois, marmots, and bats, along with 115 species of birds such as the black woodpecker, the kestrel, and the golden eagle. The park also hosts numerous reptiles and roughly 100 species of butterflies.

The wild beauty of Belluno Dolomites National Park

The park is a vast, mostly uninhabited natural territory that shifts between expansive meadows, forests, high peaks, and karst formations. About 1% of the land consists of lakes and streams. Its lowest elevation is 412 meters, while its highest peak reaches 2,565 meters. You can also find the longest cave in Veneto here, which extends for a total of 35 kilometers and reaches 1,052 meters in depth.

Planning a trip to Belluno Dolomites National Park

Belluno Dolomites National Park features a network of over 200 kilometers of hiking trails, some of which cross the Dolomite summits, including the Alte Vie (High Routes). Horseback riding and cycling are also options. In winter, near the Cortina peak, the park opens up for winter sports with opportunities for skiing and snowshoeing.

Many educational spaces open to the public provide insight into the environment and history of the park, including three visitor centers, a botanical garden, an environmental education center, and a natural history museum. Furthermore, the park contains a few archaeological sites, the Valle Imperina mining center, as well as historic religious sites like churches and hospices.

Great hiking north of Venice

North of the Serenissima, but in a totally different spirit, this national park welcomes you for some hiking in the heart of nature, between mountains (the Dolomites), lakes, streams, forests, cows, and marmots. For my part, I did a loop around a lake, a half day for about thirty euros, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo.
Not too difficult, and not too crowded when we were there in April. Pretty views, and we spotted marmots several times!
