Visiting Kilimanjaro National Park, at the foot of the African giant

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Kilimanjaro National Park surrounds and preserves this famous mountain while sheltering a notable variety of wildlife and vegetation. This 1,668 km² park is more than just a summit climb. It offers a range of landscapes and ecosystems that appeal to nature lovers and hikers.

Surprising biodiversity

The park spans several climate zones, creating highly distinct ecosystems. At the base of the mountain, tropical forests provide habitat for black and white colobus monkeys, baboons, and colorful birds like the turaco. Higher up, alpine heaths present a curious sight with strange plants like giant groundsels, which are adapted to extreme conditions. The peaks themselves reveal an arid landscape dotted with glaciers.

Alternative hiking beyond the summit

Beyond the trek to Uhuru Peak, the park offers shorter, more accessible hiking routes. For instance, the Marangu Nature Trail allows for an exploration of the lush forests, while excursions to the Shira plateau provide clear views of the slopes of Kilimanjaro without the challenges of high altitude.

Wildlife and landscape viewing

The park is a prime location for birdwatching and seeing dramatic scenery. On a clear day, the views over the Tanzanian plains and the snowcapped peak are memorable. Travelers can also visit nearby villages to learn about Chagga culture, which is deeply connected to the mountain.

An immersion in protected nature

Less crowded than other parks in Tanzania, Kilimanjaro National Park provides an immersive experience that blends nature, quiet, and diverse terrain. It is a destination for those who prioritize open spaces and ecotourism.

Beautiful nature

Kilimanjaro National Park is a gradual climb through different worlds, from humid jungle to moorlands and lunar rocks. You really feel the change in altitude. It is wild, preserved, and almost mystical at times. Even without going all the way to the summit, the hike is worth the trip. It is nature in its raw state, with no frills.

A must-do

Majestic, Kilimanjaro dominates Tanzania with its eternal snows. In the national park, it is possible to go for a one-day hike to explore the area, or for the more athletic, to attempt the multi-day climb. Lacking time, I opted for a one-day trek via the Machame route, through a lush tropical forest. The landscapes are striking. The experience is unforgettable.

Not just for Kili

I admit I came to this region to climb the famous Kili (which I recommend, by the way), but I was pleasantly surprised by the different excursions possible within this natural park: tropical forest, waterfalls, animals, and birds of all kinds. Interesting!
