Visit one of Europe's top theme parks: PortAventura Park

Ready to leave the Ramblas of Barcelona behind and walk along the Great Wall of China? It is easier than you think. Just an hour drive from the Catalan capital sits one of the best theme parks in Europe: PortAventura Park. This massive amusement park promises a trip around the world through its 6 themed lands. A trip to PortAventura Park is your chance to channel a condor in Mexico, explore the edges of the Far West, and plunge down the slopes of the highest volcanoes in Polynesia. Buckle up and discover the 40 iconic attractions at PortAventura Park, the third most visited leisure park in Europe.

The best amusement park in Southern Europe

PortAventura Park is located between Vila-Seca and Salou in Spain, just 2 kilometers from the Mediterranean beaches. The park is part of the PortAventura World leisure complex, which includes two other theme parks: Ferrari Land and Caribe Aquatic Park.

A unique resort located in Catalonia, on the Costa Dorada

PortAventura World is a top destination in Northern Spain. Beyond the famous PortAventura Park, the complex includes two equally fascinating worlds:

  • Ferrari Land: A park designed to put you in the shoes of a Formula 1 driver. The star attraction at Ferrari Land is the Red Force coaster, a circuit that delivers F1 thrills by launching you from 0 to 180 km/h in just a few seconds.

  • Caribe Aquatic Park: A massive water park that recreates the relaxed atmosphere of the Caribbean.

The history of PortAventura

PortAventura Park was the first of the three parks to be built, opening in 1995. The land was originally earmarked for a future Disney park before that project moved to the Paris region with the 1992 creation of Disneyland Paris. The designers of PortAventura eventually pivoted toward a park focused on exotic themes and travel. From the start, the magic of PortAventura has been about fitting a real trip around the world into 119 hectares.

Ideally located just a few kilometers from the beaches and the Barcelona airport, PortAventura found its audience quickly. Over the years, its dining and lodging options have expanded significantly. Today, PortAventura Park offers a selection of 6 upscale 4 or 5-star hotels, as well as camping and caravanning spots. It is the perfect setup for a dream getaway with family or friends. Do not wait to discover the best leisure destination in the Mediterranean basin.

The thrill rides of PortAventura

The site is primarily an extraordinary destination for thrill seekers. The amusement park offers a range of rides among the fastest and most intense in the world. For example, the Shambhala roller coaster held several European records between 2012 and 2017, including the title for the fastest ride in Europe, with top speeds reaching 134 km/h.

Beyond Shambhala, there are three other standout coasters at PortAventura Park:

  • Dragon Khan, a classic attraction that mimics the path of a dragon in the sky. The circuit features eight loops and hits a top speed of 110 km/h.

  • Stampida, a wooden roller coaster that is an absolute must.

  • Uncharted, the latest flagship attraction at PortAventura Park, inspired by the video game and created in partnership with Sony. This dark ride is intense and includes the first lateral drop in Europe.

When it comes to speed, you will love the Furius Baco launch coaster, which rockets you from 0 to 135 km/h in just three seconds. PortAventura Park also holds its own in the free-fall category with the 100-meter-tall Hurakan Condor.

Experience the PortAventura adventure with family or friends

Visiting PortAventura Park as a group is a great way to spend time with family or friends. With its extraordinary attractions and detailed sets, this leisure park appeals to all ages and adapts to every need.

6 themed areas for a trip around the world

PortAventura Park is organized into 6 areas, most of which represent a specific region of the globe. You will feel like you have traveled without ever leaving the complex. Venture into the heart of the Polynesian jungle or challenge the stormy waters of the Colorado in the American West. There is something for everyone.

The 5 regions represented at PortAventura Park are:

  • Mediterrania, which starts the journey. It represents a small fishing village typical of the Mediterranean basin. Enjoy different seafood specialties offered by the local restaurants.

  • Chine Antique (Ancient China), where you can hop into teacups that spin on their own or try the Cobra Imperial, a massive green snake that spins faster and faster.

  • The Ouest américain (American West), with great recreations of saloons from the old Far West. It is the perfect place to play the part of a sheriff.

  • México and its legends, where you will be introduced to the most secret Mayan rites. Enjoy the local food scene, which is full of tacos, fajitas, and guacamole.

  • Polynesia, a fantastic aquatic realm where you can go canoeing and plunge down the 15-meter drop of an iconic water ride, the Tutuki Splash.

A space adapted for children at PortAventura

The sixth themed area of PortAventura Park is reserved for families with young children. Inspired by the cult TV show Sesame Street, it offers various shows featuring the most iconic puppets from the series, like Ernie and Bert. Here, the roller coasters are kid-sized, with rides like Tami Tami. The Street Mission dark ride follows the adventures of Detective Grover, who is on an important secret mission. Finally, play areas for toddlers, including slides and swings, are located at the Huerto Encantado (Enchanted Orchard).

PortAventura Park accommodates all types of visitors. On-site, you will find all the amenities necessary for short or long stays. Enjoy one of the best theme parks in Europe alone, as a couple, with your family, or with a group of friends. Something for everyone

Very well-designed themed areas, rides for thrill-seekers or more laid-back ones, in short, everyone will have a great time. A bit pricey though.

Visited with friends

I visited this park a few years ago with some friends back when it didn't have its worldwide fame yet.
The rides are thrilling and the themes are cool.
I felt like there was less waiting than at Disneyland, for example.

An excellent day

Immense park where one full day won't be enough to get through all the rides and things to see. To really enjoy it, I recommend spending 2 days there.

Thrills for a decent price

I wasn't expecting to find a park this big, with so much decoration and entertainment. For me, it's on the same level as Disney, just with more thrill rides, the Catalan weather, and about twenty euros saved on the admission ticket.
