Visiting Cadaqués Beach
The Costa Brava is one of the most remarkable stretches of coastline in Spain. Its rocky shore offers landscapes where the sea meets dramatic cliffs, showcasing nature that is as powerful as it is beautiful. Within this exceptional setting, the small village of Cadaqués feels like a secluded escape. Tucked away and protected by the Cap de Creus (Creus Cape), this fishing port sits in a deep bay and gained fame thanks to Salvador Dalí, who lived here for decades. His statue now watches over the main beach, the Platja Gran, a picturesque shoreline right in the heart of town.
A beach in the heart of an authentic village
It is often said that the rocky coast is dotted with beautiful beaches, but that requires a bit of nuance. Fine sand and vast stretches are not the norm in Cadaqués. The Platja Gran is no exception. You will not find golden shores here, as it is composed of pebbles, but it possesses a charm that many idyllic spots would envy. Centrally located, it is framed by an urban environment that only adds to its picturesque beauty. The whitewashed buildings create a cocoon that contrasts with the blue sea, which is clear and calm, disturbed only by the occasional fishing boat. At 200 m (about 650 feet) long, it is not large and tends to fill up quickly. Just steps from the narrow streets, it is a favorite for families because it is easy to access, the water is relatively shallow, and swimming is safe. Typical Spanish bars and restaurants, known as chiringuitos, line the waterfront promenade, which is a fantastic walk. In a five-minute stroll, you reach the tiny Platja del Port d'Alguer, famous for being immortalized by Salvador Dalí. The overturned hulls of boats resting on the sand and the proximity of the Església de Santa Maria (Church of Saint Mary) create an incredible atmosphere.
Cadaqués beach is more of a small cove than a large sandy beach. Contrary to the previous review, I found that there were still quite a lot of people. I suggest you come early in the morning or in the evening to really enjoy it. The beach is very pleasant and perfect for snorkeling.
