What to know about Playa del Carmen Beach

Located right in the heart of the Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen Beach draws visitors with its white sand and turquoise water. It is a major draw for tourists and stays highly accessible from the downtown area. Like many spots throughout the Caribbean, the shoreline can be affected by sargassum seaweed depending on the time of year.

A popular and busy stretch of sand

Just steps from Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue), this beach is active and often packed during the high season. To beat the crowds, plan to arrive early or head north along the coast. The water is usually calm and well-suited for swimming, though the occasional arrival of sargassum can impact water clarity and create a distinct odor on the sand.

Sargassum: a recurring challenge

For several years, Playa del Carmen Beach has dealt with regular influxes of sargassum, a brown seaweed that washes up in large quantities, particularly between April and October. Local crews manage daily cleanups, though their success depends on the intensity of the seaweed blooms. It is smart to check real-time conditions before heading out for the day.

Activities and local services

Despite these seasonal variables, the beach remains a functional spot with plenty of amenities, including lounge chair and umbrella rentals, along with various beachfront restaurants and bars. Water activities are plentiful, with options for snorkeling, paddleboarding, jet skiing, and boat excursions to the island of Cozumel. If the seaweed buildup is heavy, you can find more sheltered options just a few miles away at Xpu-Ha or Punta Esmeralda.

Not as nice as the one in Cancun

I find the beaches in Cancun much nicer than those in Playa del Carmen. But you have to admit that the water is much calmer and therefore better for swimming in Playa del Carmen. It is an ideal destination for families. With friends, the beach will mostly be a chance to recover from your night of drinking the day before. The problem is that street vendors will constantly bother you during your nap...

Mexican beaches

The colorful and clear waters of Mexico are fabulous. But it is not just the beaches that are attractive in this country. It is also the Mayan ruins dating from the pre-Columbian era, and the influence of this culture that is noticeable in daily life, that makes Mexico a must-visit country.

Perfect for fans of big beaches

Big white sand beach, turquoise water, seaside restaurants, water sports, and plenty of sun (outside of the rainy season). A beach for everyone!
