Visiting the Roman Bridge
In northern Spain, the Asturias region is known for its vast green valleys and rugged landscape. Yet in Cangas de Onís, a small mountain town that serves as a gateway to the Picos de Europa National Park, the stonework takes center stage. The Roman Bridge has become one of the area's most recognizable landmarks. Also known as the Puentón, this structure crossing the Sella river is a staple of any visit. While modest in size, it features a cross suspended in its center, creating a unique aesthetic that makes it a favorite for photographers.

It is called Roman, but the construction visible today dates back to the Middle Ages. It was built between 1311 and 1350, during the reign of Alfonso XI. Its thick buttresses and specific architectural details suggest the Puentón was built on the foundations of an ancient Roman road. The design is simple yet elegant, featuring one large central arch flanked by two smaller ones. The fate of the Roman Bridge would be entirely different without the cross hanging in its center, which is undoubtedly its defining charm. It is a replica of the Victory Cross, a masterpiece of pre-Romanesque art covered in gold and precious stones and a symbol of Asturias. While the original is kept at the Cathedral of San Salvador of Oviedo, the version in Cangas de Onís is a hit with visitors. Painted in color and suspended by two chains, it serves as the signature of a bridge that was the only way to cross the river until the 19th century. In a region bordering Cantabria, the bridge was once a vital piece of infrastructure rather than just an aesthetic attraction. Today, it is one of the main reasons to visit this picturesque village, which is also famous for its local cheeses.

The special thing about this bridge is that it is 2,000 years old. It is still functional, and you can still walk across it to cross the river below.
That being said, I don't find the bridge itself to be that impressive. It is relatively small and not very well preserved. The real appeal lies in the surroundings: the neighborhood, the river where you can cool off your feet, and the walks you can take in the local nature. In short, a great time for families or couples.
