Visiting San Cristóbal de las Casas Cathedral, a colonial treasure in the city center
The San Cristóbal de las Casas Cathedral, located on the main square, is one of the most recognizable landmarks in this city in Chiapas. Dating back to the 16th century, this Catholic structure blends several architectural styles and embodies the religious and colonial history of the region. It is a logical stop for those looking to explore local culture and architecture while enjoying the peaceful vibe of this busy central plaza.
Baroque architecture with diverse influences
The cathedral facade is defined by its baroque style tinged with Mudejar and neoclassical details. The vibrant yellow and red colors add a local touch, making this church particularly photogenic. Inside, visitors can admire ornate altars and religious sculptures dating from the colonial era, as well as a historic organ that is still in use. The carved details and ornaments reflect the fusion of indigenous and Spanish cultures.
A hub for spiritual and cultural life
The cathedral is not just a place of worship, but also an active cultural center for the local community. It hosts religious celebrations throughout the year, notably Semaine Sainte (Holy Week), which draws many worshippers and travelers. Furthermore, visitors can enjoy cultural events that take place on the large square in front of the cathedral, where artisans, musicians, and traditional dancers perform regularly.
A view across the city
From the cathedral esplanade, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the city and the surrounding mountains. The perfect spot for a stroll after your visit, the main square serves as a meeting point for locals and offers a glimpse into daily life in San Cristóbal de las Casas.
It stretches across the entire north side of the Zocalo and overlooks a large, slightly raised plaza that offers a good view of the surrounding mountains. Unfortunately, in February 2018, it was closed to visitors because of the earthquake that happened in September 2017. It really takes a long time for monuments to get repaired.
