The cathedral of baseball in Chicago
Wrigley Field, the iconic baseball stadium in Chicago, sits right in the heart of the Lakeview neighborhood. Opened in 1914, this historic ballpark is best known as the home of the Chicago Cubs of Major League Baseball. Its distinct architecture makes it a favorite for fans across the United States.
A stadium with humble beginnings
Originally built as Weeghman Park for the Chicago Whales of the Federal League, the stadium was renamed Wrigley Field in 1926 to honor William Wrigley Jr., the owner of the Cubs.
Designed by Zachary Taylor Davis, the stadium had an initial capacity of about 14,000 spectators. Over the decades, it has undergone multiple renovations, including expanded seating and the addition of lights for night games, which was not standard practice at the time.
Despite these updates, Wrigley Field has held onto classic features like its hand-turned scoreboard, ivy-covered outfield walls, and its unique brick facade, all of which cement its status as a baseball landmark.
Wrigley Field in the 21st century
Today, Wrigley Field balances tradition with modern amenities. The capacity now exceeds 41,000 seats, and it hosts not only Cubs games but also concerts and various events throughout the year.
Recent renovations include major improvements to seating, new food and beverage options, and modernized fan facilities. The stadium offers guided tours that provide a deep dive into its history, unique architecture, and its place in American sports culture.
The experience at Wrigley Field extends beyond baseball, drawing visitors from all over for its distinct atmosphere and deep-rooted history.
With its massive vertical beams and wrought iron gates, I have never seen a stadium quite like it. It is the legacy of an era when sports were not yet a spectacle that brings in billions.
Unfortunately, I did not fully understand baseball back then, but I have a fantastic memory of the atmosphere that reigns there and the bleachers. Very far from European soccer stadiums, this is a place where it must be nice to come on a Sunday with the family.
On my next trip to Chicago, I will definitely go back.
