The Warm Waters of Yellowstone

Where to stay near Yellowstone National Park: the 4 areas to know in 2026

Our four members describe two different parks, and that is the key to where you sleep. Jean Luc comes for « the geological curiosities you find there: geysers, hot springs, and mineralized pools with incredible colors » ; Tamahagane comes for the other Yellowstone, the one where « on the ticket booths, you can see the number of visitors who have been gored by bison. That is how you know you are entering the wild. » The geysers are in the west, the animals in the north, and between the two lie almost two hours of driving inside the park.

Hence a single useful question: which gate? Old Faithful is 50.8 kilometres from West Yellowstone and 90.8 from Gardiner; Tower Junction, where the Lamar Valley begins, is 37 kilometres from Gardiner and 51.8 from Cooke City. Four areas share the nights: the park itself with its nine lodges, West Yellowstone, Gardiner, then Cooke City and Silver Gate. From early November to mid-April, only one of them is still reachable by car.

Our tips for booking the right place

  • The gate decides what you will see, not the park: Our members tell of two Yellowstones. Jean Luc's is made of « geysers, hot springs, and mineralized pools with incredible colors »: it lies in the west, around Old Faithful and the Grand Prismatic. Tamahagane's begins « right from the entrance », with « the number of visitors who have been gored by bison » posted at the booths: it lies in the north, in the Lamar Valley. Between the two, almost two hours of driving, and they happen INSIDE the park, where the speed limit is 72 kilometres per hour. From West Yellowstone, Old Faithful takes sixty-two minutes and Tower Junction is 77.2 kilometres away; from Gardiner it is the other way round, forty-seven minutes to Tower Junction and 114 minutes to Old Faithful. Choosing your gate means choosing your park.
  • From November to April, only one road stays open to cars: The road that runs from the north gate, at Gardiner, to Cooke City by Tower Junction is the only one in the park open to ordinary vehicles all year. The others close from early November to late April, and the reopenings are then staggered from mid-April to late May depending on the altitude. Between December and March, the interior is travelled by commercially guided snowmobile or snowcoach, on a season announced from 15 December to about 15 March. The practical consequence: a winter stay is slept in Gardiner, and a winter stay in Cooke City means 88.9 kilometres of driving inside the park to get there, the eastern road being closed from mid-October to late May.
  • The park's nine lodges, what they give and what they do not: « Treat yourself to a few nights in one of the park hotels or campgrounds, you will not regret it! », writes Emilee, and the geography bears it out: from Old Faithful, the Grand Prismatic is fifteen minutes away, against forty-five from West Yellowstone. There are nine of them along the loop, three at Old Faithful and the others at Mammoth, Canyon, Lake Village, Grant Village and Tower-Roosevelt. What they do not give: the rooms have neither air conditioning nor television, and seven of the nine close between autumn and spring, the seasons running from early June to early September for the Roosevelt cabins and from May to mid-October for the Old Faithful Inn. Two stay open in winter, at Mammoth and at Old Faithful, with a break in March and April.
  • The bison, the legal distances and what our member read at the booths: « Keep an eye on these giants », writes Tamahagane, « when they decide to cross the road, it is up to the cars to move, not the other way around. They just keep going straight. » The park says the same thing in figures: stay at least 23 metres away from bison and elk, 91 metres from bears, wolves and cougars. And it spells out what the booths display: bison have injured more visitors than any other animal in the park, and they run three times faster than a human. This weighs on the choice of a bed, because the animals show themselves at dawn and at dusk: sleeping in Gardiner or Cooke City means being in the Lamar Valley at those hours without driving forty-seven minutes first.
  • What entry costs, and the $100* secondary sources forget: $35* per private vehicle, valid for seven consecutive days, $30* per motorcycle for up to two motorcycles and four passengers, $20* per person on foot or by bicycle from the age of 16, free below. Since the beginning of 2026, a surcharge of $100* per person aged 16 and over applies to anyone who is neither a citizen nor a resident of the United States, in eleven parks including this one, and photo identification is asked for at the booths. Only an annual pass waives it, and the one that does so for a non-resident is the America the Beautiful at $250*: the park pass, at $70*, does not cover the surcharge. For two people over 16, the surcharge therefore weighs more than the vehicle entry fee; for three, it goes past the price of the non-resident annual pass, which is good for a year and for every federal park.
Where not to stay near Yellowstone National Park
  • Booking « near Yellowstone » without looking at the gate: from one entrance to the other there are almost two hours of driving inside the park.
  • Planning Old Faithful from Cooke City: 148.4 kilometres and 177 minutes each way.
  • Counting on the west or south gate in winter: they close to cars from early November to mid-April at least.
  • Expecting an air-conditioned room or a television in the park lodges: none of the nine has either.

FAQ: where to stay near Yellowstone National Park

Which gate should we choose?
The one that matches what you have come to see, because the two halves of the park are almost two hours apart. For the geysers and the coloured pools, West Yellowstone: Old Faithful 50.8 kilometres and sixty-two minutes away, the Grand Prismatic 39.8. For the animals, Gardiner or Cooke City: Tower Junction, where the Lamar Valley begins, is 37 kilometres from Gardiner and 51.8 from Cooke City. For a winter stay, Gardiner, and with no alternative: it is the only entrance the snow leaves open to cars.
Is it worth sleeping inside the park?
It is useful if you want the sights early in the morning: from Old Faithful, the Grand Prismatic is fifteen minutes away, against forty-five from West Yellowstone, and there is no barrier to go through again. The nine lodges are spread along the loop, three at Old Faithful, the others at Mammoth, Canyon, Lake Village, Grant Village and Tower-Roosevelt. In exchange, the rooms have neither air conditioning nor television, seven of the nine close from autumn to spring, and we have no room to open for you inside the park: the seven addresses on this page are at the gates.
How much does park entry cost?
$35* per private vehicle for seven consecutive days, $30* per motorcycle, $20* per person on foot or by bicycle from the age of 16, free below. Since the beginning of 2026, eleven national parks including Yellowstone also ask $100* per person aged 16 and over from anyone who is neither a citizen nor a resident of the United States, with photo identification asked for at the booths. Only the non-resident annual pass, at $250*, waives it; the park pass, at $70*, does not cover the surcharge.
How many nights should we plan?
Emilee is clear: the park « is worth spending several days at: 4 or 5 ». Tamahagane goes further and speaks of a week. The reason lies in the distances: almost two hours of driving separate Old Faithful from the Lamar Valley, and the round trip takes a whole day. Two nights are enough for one half of the park, as long as you choose which; four let you see both without spending the stay at the wheel, and that is the rhythm our members describe.
And in winter, is it possible?
Yes, but the map changes. Only one road stays open to cars, from Gardiner to Cooke City by Tower Junction, and the other entrances reopen only from April, the reopenings staggered until late May depending on the altitude. The interior of the park is travelled from December to March by commercially guided snowmobile or snowcoach, on a season announced from 15 December to about 15 March. Two of the park lodges stay open, at Mammoth and at Old Faithful, with a break in March and April. For a winter stay, the room is taken in Gardiner.
How far should we stay from the animals?
The park sets two figures: at least 23 metres from bison and elk, 91 metres from bears, wolves and cougars. It adds what Tamahagane saw posted at the booths: bison have injured more visitors than any other animal in the park, and they run three times faster than a human. The driving advice holds too: « when they decide to cross the road, it is up to the cars to move, not the other way around. They just keep going straight. »
