Visiting the Scaliger Castle: the sentinel of Lake Garda
You do not enter Sirmione without paying your respects. The Scaliger Castle is more than just a castle, it is the monumental gateway to the historic center, a fortress that appears to rise directly from the calm waters of the lake. Crossing its drawbridge is an invitation to step out of time, a pact with medieval history.
Why is the Scaliger fortress so unique?
Built in the 13th century by the powerful Veronese Della Scala family, its function was twofold: to defend the territory and to control the small, strategic port of Sirmione. It stands as one of the most extraordinary and best-preserved examples of lakeside fortification in Italy. Its defining feature is the darsena, an enclosed fortified port designed to shelter the Scaliger fleet, a rare architectural element that speaks to its past military importance.
Climbing the keep: a view you earn
The core of the visit is undoubtedly the climb to the top of the main keep. After ascending the 146 steps, the effort is rewarded with a panoramic view. From this height of nearly 47 meters (about 154 feet), your gaze sweeps across the entire Sirmione peninsula, its red-tiled roofs, the deep blue of the Lake Garda, and the mountains taking shape on the horizon. It is the ultimate vantage point to grasp the unique geography of this strip of land.
Pro tip: The interior of the castle is quite sparse, so the main appeal really lies in the views from the ramparts and the keep. Arrive at opening time to avoid the afternoon crowds and enjoy the soft light, which is ideal for photography.
Architecture designed for water
The fortress is a masterclass in medieval military architecture. Everything here was designed with the lake in mind, as it forms impassable natural moats.
The wall walks and interior courtyards
Once you cross the drawbridge, you enter the main courtyard, surrounded by high walls and corner towers. You can then walk the ramparts, imagining guards scanning the horizon. These passages offer changing perspectives on the interior courtyards, the towers, and the famous darsena.
The darsena: a refuge for the fleet
The second courtyard leads to the darsena, the fortified port that serves as the castle's true signature. Protected by towers and walls, it allowed the boats of the Scaliger fleet to find a safe harbor. Today, this expanse of water trapped within the fortress creates a unique and powerful atmosphere, a silent testament to the military ingenuity of the era.
Between history and legend
Like any self-respecting medieval fortress, the Scaliger Castle is also the setting for a tragic legend. It is said that on stormy nights, the ghost of a young man named Ebengardo wanders the corridors of the castle. He is supposedly searching eternally for his beloved Arice, who was killed by a knight to whom they had offered hospitality. This story adds a touch of dark romanticism to your visit.
