Temple Kiyomizu

Visiting Kiyomizu-dera, the suspended temple of Kyoto's sacred springs

Rising above Kyoto, on the wooded slopes of the Higashiyama hills, you feel the soul of ancient Japan. The approach to Kiyomizu-dera is an experience in itself, a climb through lively narrow streets lined with traditional shops.

Then, the noise fades as you reach the vermilion Nio-mon gate. You enter a space where spiritual devotion, architectural ingenuity, and nature merge, offering an unforgettable perspective on the imperial city.

Why is Kiyomizu-dera a Kyoto essential?

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Kiyomizu-dera (literally "Temple of Pure Water") is one of the most famous and significant temples in Japan.

Founded in 778, long before Kyoto became the imperial capital, its history is tied to the city itself. Its popularity comes not just from its age, but from its ability to create perfect harmony between sacred pavilions and the surrounding landscape, which changes character with every season.

Visiting Kiyomizu-dera is not just about seeing a monument. It is about participating in a living pilgrimage that draws millions of visitors and worshippers every year. It embodies the essence of Japanese aesthetics and spirituality, a stop required to understand the cultural heart of Kyoto.

A terrace suspended between sky and earth

The most iconic element of the temple is its monumental wooden terrace, the Kiyomizu no butai. Attached to the main building (Hondo), it juts out thirteen meters over the void, supported by an impressive scaffolding of 139 pillars made of zelkova wood. Most fascinating is that the structure was assembled without using a single nail, a true masterpiece of traditional carpentry.

Standing on this stage offers a panoramic view over the sea of Kyoto rooftops and the surrounding hills. In spring, the view plunges into an ocean of cherry blossoms, while autumn clothes the landscape in the fiery colors of the maples. It is the most photographed viewpoint in the city, a balcony overlooking eternity.

The sacred Otowa-no-taki waterfall: a wish with every sip

Below the Hondo lies the reason for the temple: the Otowa-no-taki waterfall. Its waters, known for their purifying and miraculous properties, are divided into three distinct streams. Visitors wait in line to collect this sacred water using long-handled ladles. According to popular tradition, each stream grants a different blessing: longevity, success in studies, and a happy love life.

Be careful, however, as custom dictates that you drink from only one of the three streams. Attempting to obtain all three blessings in one visit is considered an act of greed. This simple and popular ritual is a highlight of the visit, connecting the traveler to the spiritual and living dimension of the site.

Beyond the terrace: pagodas and secret shrines

The Kiyomizu-dera complex is vast and filled with other treasures. Do not miss the Jishu-jinja shrine, located just behind the Hondo and dedicated to the deity of love. Visitors have fun trying to walk between two stones with their eyes closed to find their soulmate. A little further on, the three-story Koyasu pagoda, with its bright red paint, offers another magnificent viewpoint and is associated with easy childbirth.

Exploring the grounds reveals many other halls, gates, and statues that deserve your full attention.

The most beautiful place in Japan

Kiyomizu-dera is my favorite temple in Japan because it offers a panoramic view of Kyoto surrounded by mountains. We walked there by passing through the authentic (and touristy) Gion neighborhood. We chose to wear kimonos for the occasion. It was a really cool experience, even climbing up there in traditional Japanese wooden sandals. A nice surprise at the top, a magnificent temple that is very different from the others.

Beautiful view of the cherry blossoms

One of the main temples in Kyoto, it offers a truly magnificent panorama from its large terrace. The architecture will immerse you in the atmosphere of the ancient capital. Like all the iconic sites in the city, however, it is overrun by tourists. It will be difficult to enjoy it peacefully, just like the shopping streets nearby. Note that you will also find plenty of restaurants in the surrounding area. Convenient for a tasty break!
