A day at the Gellért Baths, a signature Budapest experience
Located at the foot of Gellért Hill, on the banks of the Danube, the Gellért Baths are one of the most famous thermal establishments in Budapest. Built in 1918, this complex pairs the charm of Art Nouveau architecture with the benefits of natural thermal waters, drawing both locals and travelers looking for a place to relax and recharge.
Remarkable architecture
The Gellért Baths building is a masterpiece of Art Nouveau design. Upon entering, you are greeted by colorful mosaics, stained glass, and ornate sculptures that reflect the cultural depth of Budapest. The indoor pool, framed by majestic columns and a vaulted ceiling, is particularly striking. Even if you do not plan on using the pools, the architecture alone makes it a worthwhile stop for fans of history and design.
The benefits of thermal water
The Gellért Baths draw water from the hot springs of Gellért Hill, which are rich in minerals like calcium and magnesium. With a variety of pools, including thermal baths at different temperatures, a whirlpool, and a sauna, the space is built for relaxation. Visitors dealing with joint or muscle pain often find the soothing effects of these mineral-rich waters helpful.
A full range of treatments
Beyond the baths, the Gellért Baths offer therapeutic massages, beauty treatments, and even specialized medical services. These services make it a favorite for visitors looking to combine relaxation with wellness. It is recommended to book in advance to secure the most popular treatments.

Outdoor pools are small, but heated and pleasant, even when it is chilly outside.
Inside, there are many small pools at different temperatures for sitting in the water, plus saunas, steam rooms, and a (relatively) large pool for swimming laps (swim cap mandatory). All of this is set in beautiful Art Nouveau (or is it Art Deco?) architecture.
Worth doing once for the experience, but given the price, this is not where you will go for your weekly session of front crawl laps.
