The Indo-Saracenic dome overlooking Kala Ghoda

Right at the entrance grounds, a majestic dome dominates the Mumbai landscape of Kala Ghoda, while a giant, hollow Buddha head sits on the lawn. You can spot both right away from the street before even stepping through the museum doors.

A columned hall and an arcaded pavilion welcome visitors, setting the stage before you head into the galleries proper.

Why visit the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya

The building was designed by architect George Wittet, selected through an open competition held in 1909. It stands as a prime example of the Indo-Saracenic style, an architectural movement born in British India that fuses Mughal, Hindu, and Victorian Gothic elements. The museum sits on a semicircular plot known as the Crescent Site.

Since 2018, the building has been an UNESCO World Heritage Site, integrated into the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai. During the First World War, its halls served as a military hospital before returning to their original museum purpose.

A collection of 50,000 objects

The collection brings together roughly 50,000 objects spread across archaeology, sculpture, painting, decorative arts, and natural history galleries. The archaeology wing features notable artifacts from the Indus Valley Civilization.

One room is entirely dedicated to arms and armor, where swords, shields, spears, maces, and axes trace centuries of Indian martial art history. The museum also houses the largest collection of Indian miniature paintings in Asia, featuring over 2,000 works from various artistic schools across the subcontinent.

The garden and the centennial baobab

The grounds have kept their original landscaped layout, planted with palm trees and flowerbeds that invite a stroll before or after exploring the galleries. In the children's activity area stands a nearly century-old baobab tree, forming a striking silhouette in the middle of this urban garden.

Beautiful building

This museum is housed in a beautiful building that blends both Indian and European styles. The gardens are also very lovely and well-maintained. The visit is pretty interesting with a vast collection. One small downside, the explanations are sometimes missing or not very clear despite the audio guide. Worth seeing if you come to Mumbai.
