Visiting Mercantour National Park, a natural sanctuary
Mercantour National Park, located in the Southern Alps along the border between France and Italy, is one of the most protected and varied national parks in France. Established in 1979, it spans over 685 square kilometers (about 264 square miles) and offers diverse landscapes, ranging from snow-capped alpine peaks to lush Mediterranean valleys.
Remarkable biodiversity
Mercantour is home to exceptional flora and fauna, with over 2,000 plant species, including several that are endemic, and a wide variety of animals. Among the iconic species, you will find the wolf, which reappeared naturally in the 1990s, the ibex, the chamois, and numerous birds of prey like the golden eagle and the bearded vulture. The park is also known for its glacial lakes, mountain streams, and dense forests, which provide varied habitats for this rich biodiversity.
A hiker's paradise, and more
Mercantour National Park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Hikers can take advantage of more than 600 kilometers (about 373 miles) of marked trails, including the famous GR5 long-distance footpath that traverses the Alps. Experienced hikers can attempt the climb up Mont Bego, while families will enjoy more accessible walks around the lacs de Vens or Allos.
History and culture enthusiasts will also find plenty to explore, such as the rock engravings in the Vallée des Merveilles (Valley of Marvels), a unique archaeological site featuring over 40,000 carvings dating back to the Bronze Age. Picturesque villages like Saint-Martin-Vésubie or Tende also offer a glimpse into the local heritage with their traditions and distinct architecture.
For me, this is one of the most beautiful national parks I have ever seen. It is huge and full of spectacular hikes. Between the mountains and the lakes, the breathtaking scenery is just incredible. For me, the best hikes are in the Vallée des Merveilles. Obviously, with a name like that, you cannot make it up!! In the spring, you can see marmots and chamois out and about!
