Gelsenkirchen Stadium

Where to stay near Veltins-Arena: the 4 areas to know in 2026

Our member expected nothing of this ground, and he says so plainly: « Schalke 04 and its stadium are far from being the best known [...] and I was expecting very little ». He left with « impressive dimensions and shapes », « a very pleasant surprise », and one detail he puts in brackets: « there is even a retractable roof ». The Veltins-Arena holds 62,271 places, 16,307 of them standing in its north stand.

The thing is, this stadium sits in no town: it stands in the middle of the Arena-Park, roughly 120 hectares of lawns and sports facilities north of Gelsenkirchen. Two hotels hold ground there, 348 and 853 metres from the gate. Beyond them a tram line decides everything: the 302 runs past the stands every ten minutes, climbs to Buer and drops down to the main station, from where a direct train reaches Essen.

The Arena-Park, around the stands 348 and 853 metres from the gate, in the club's lawns

Anyone who wants to leave the ground without taking transport

The stadium occupies the Berger Feld, a club-owned site that became the Arena-Park: roughly 120 hectares holding, besides the stands, a health centre and a hotel, both built in 2006 on the plateau of the old south curve of the Parkstadion. Sleeping here therefore means sleeping on the ground of the former stadium, 348 metres from the new one. The second hotel stands 853 metres away, along the Willy-Brandt-Allee, and it is its tram stop that counts: of the two stops in the area, only that one has step-free access.

a huge atmosphere, loud but good-natured

Our tips for booking the right place

  • Tram 302 passes the stands, and it is what shapes this page: The line runs from Buer town hall to Bochum station, that is 30 kilometres in 75 minutes end to end, with a service every 10 minutes, every day. It stops outside the stadium. The practical consequence: from Gelsenkirchen main station the stadium announces around 15 minutes by tram, against around 25 minutes on bus 380 or 381 to the Sportparadies stop, followed by around 15 minutes on foot. So the choice of area is made along this line, and nowhere else.
  • Parking is free, except on the evenings you are coming: The stadium's access page states it in black and white: on days with no match and no event, parking costs nothing. On match days it is paid for, and the covered car parks of the ground ask for a booking. In other words, a stadium tour on a Tuesday in November parks for free, and the evening of the match is the opposite. The same document announces more than 600 spaces for bicycles, a figure that tells you as much about the Ruhr as its car parks do.
  • The stadium stop has no step-free access, the next one does: It is written on the access page and nobody repeats it elsewhere: the VELTINS-Arena stop is not adapted, and the one that is goes by the name Willy-Brandt-Allee, around 15 minutes' walk from the stadium. That changes the room calculation, since our second Arena-Park address stands on precisely that avenue, 853 metres from the stands.
Where not to stay near Veltins-Arena
  • Counting on bus 380 or 381 from the station: around 25 minutes of travel, then around 15 minutes on foot, when the tram asks a quarter of an hour in all.
  • Driving in on the evening of a fixture believing parking is still free: it only is on days with no match and no event.
  • Looking for a town street inside the Arena-Park: this is roughly 120 hectares of lawns, car parks and sports facilities.

FAQ: where to stay near Veltins-Arena

Sleep inside the stadium park or further out?
Inside the park if the fixture is your only reason for coming: the nearer of the two hotels holds ground 348 metres from the gate, the second at 853, and no transport is needed on the way back. Aim further out if you want a street, tables and shops: Buer and its pedestrian street lie 2.8 kilometres away, the centre of Gelsenkirchen and its station 6, and Essen, with its 593,085 inhabitants, 12. In every case the same tram line links bed to stands.
How many spectators fit into this stadium?
62,271 places when the league allows standing room, 16,307 of them in the north stand alone, and 54,740 when everyone must be seated, which is the rule for international fixtures. The opening dates from 13 August 2001, under the name Arena AufSchalke; the name Veltins-Arena arrived in 2005, with the sale of the naming rights to a brewery.
And without a car, how do you get there?
By tram 302, direction GE-Buer, from Gelsenkirchen main station: around 15 minutes to the VELTINS-Arena stop, with a service every 10 minutes. The same line comes from Bochum, whose main station is 54 minutes from the stadium. Buses 380 and 381 serve the Sportparadies stop in around 25 minutes, but around 15 minutes on foot then remain.
Can you park on site?
Yes, and without paying anything on days with no match and no event: the stadium's access page says so. On match days parking becomes paid for, and the covered car parks of the ground recommend booking. The same document announces more than 600 spaces for bicycles.
Does that roof really open?
It does, and our member noticed before we did: « there is even a retractable roof ». The cover spans the whole ground, and its central part, the one above the pitch, draws back or closes again. The pitch itself leaves the building on hydraulic rails, in three and a half to four hours, which frees the space for concerts and trade fairs. As for the beer, it travels through a 5-kilometre pipeline.
What is there to do around here during the day?
The Gelsenkirchen zoo holds a site that 3.3 kilometres separate from the stands. On the Essen side, the former colliery listed as world heritage stands 7.7 kilometres from the stadium and 4.4 from Essen station: it is therefore on the way, whichever direction you travel. For the rest, the Arena-Park offers roughly 120 hectares of lawns and sports facilities, and the nearest town centre is that of Buer, 2.8 kilometres away.
