Visiting Piazza Navona, an elegant baroque landmark in the heart of Rome
Piazza Navona is one of the most recognizable squares in Rome, defined by its ornate baroque architecture and constant energy. Built directly over the ancient Stadium of Domitian, it retains the distinctive oval footprint of the original arena. Surrounded by historic palazzos, restaurants, and cafes, it serves as a central hub for visitors throughout the day.
The three fountains and the work of Bernini
At the center of the square stands the Fountain of the Four Rivers, a masterpiece by the sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini. It depicts four major rivers symbolizing the continents known during the 17th century: the Nile, the Ganges, the Danube, and the Rio de la Plata. At each end of the square, two additional fountains anchor the space: the Fountain of Neptune and the Fountain of the Moor, both originally designed by Giacomo della Porta.
Sant'Agnese in Agone
On the western side of the square sits the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone, designed by Francesco Borromini, a fierce rival of Bernini. Its imposing facade and elegant dome dominate the piazza. The interior is heavily decorated and contains a chapel dedicated to Saint Agnes, who, according to local tradition, was martyred on this exact site.
Atmosphere and daily life
Piazza Navona is a standard stop for anyone walking through the city. Street artists frequently set up to perform or draw portraits, while cafe terraces offer a vantage point to take in the historic surroundings. During the winter, the square hosts a traditional Christmas market, and it remains a common meeting spot for both tourists and locals year round.
Despite the crowds, it is a perfect place to stop at a sidewalk café, and to take the time to appreciate the Roman atmosphere and the Italian way of life. I loved how lively, artistic, and vibrant it is.
The Baroque architecture is superb. There are also a lot of things to see besides the stunning fountains. For example, the church, which is very beautiful inside, and the museums nearby.
