Colosseum in Rome

Where to stay near Colosseum: the 2 areas to know in 2026

The visit is shorter than you would think: depending on the ticket, the time you may spend inside the Colosseum runs from 75 to 90 minutes, entry is at the time printed on it, and the park asks you to be at the gate a quarter of an hour early. Four of our thirteen members say the same thing about that. MathildeFlor: « buy your tickets in advance ». Laure D: « arrive early and remember to book a skip-the-line ticket ».

And then there is the evening. labaroudeuzh, our only 3 out of 5, went three times, « had to deal with the mass of tourists and ticket scalpers that flood the site », and « preferred admiring the Colosseum at night, which is lit by a soft light ». That needs no booking, costs nothing, and is watched from the street: it is the only moment when sleeping 557 metres away changes anything without a ticket.

The Celio, behind the monument From 557 to 864 metres, up on the hill

Anyone who wants the first slot and the monument at night

The hill that rises behind the Colosseum, on the south-east side: three addresses from 557 to 864 metres, which is to say the distance that lets you walk back down to see the monument lit up after dinner and be at the gate a quarter of an hour before your slot. Locations here are scored 9.7 and 9.8, the two highest in this guide. In exchange, this is a residential district: fewer tables than in Monti, and a slope to climb on the way home.

The rest of Rome, from the Forums to Trastevere Beyond 1,419 metres for Termini station

Anyone who comes for Rome first

The Roman Forum is 399 metres from the Colosseum and Termini station 1,419: in other words the whole centre of Rome is within walking distance or one metro ride, and it is Rome you have come to see. It has its own guide with us, six districts detailed street by street, including the one covering the Forums: the card below leads there, and we copy none of its addresses across. What this area costs is a walk home in the evening, instead of three hundred metres.

what is amazing is seeing all this traffic, this flow of modern cars circling around the ancient Colosseum

Rome Stay in the city Where to stay in Rome Rome has its own guide: neighbourhoods, prices, our recommended hotels.

  • Six districts detailed in our Rome guide
  • The Roman Forum 399 metres from the Colosseum
  • Termini station 1,419 metres away

Cons

  • The monument at night takes a journey
  • No address served here, by choice

Our tips for booking the right place

  • The visit lasts 75 to 90 minutes, and the quarter of an hour early is asked for: The archaeological park puts it plainly: depending on the type of ticket, the time you may remain inside the Colosseum runs from 75 to 90 minutes, and it is recommended to be at the entrance 15 minutes before the time on your ticket. It is short, and it is framed. Four of our members say the same in their own words: « if possible, buy your tickets in advance. This will save you from waiting in line for hours », writes MathildeFlor; « arrive early and remember to book a skip-the-line ticket », writes Laure D; « you would need to book in advance and arm yourself with patience, as the crowds are definitely there », writes ValNomad. Tickets go on sale 30 days before the visit date, and the Full Experience Attico option has admitted groups of at most 25 people every 30 minutes since 9 November 2026.
  • The Colosseum at night, and it is our harshest review that recommends it: labaroudeuzh gives 3 out of 5, the only low score among our thirteen reviews, and her reason is precise: « I have been there three times and each time I had to deal with the mass of tourists and ticket scalpers that flood the site ». Her conclusion does not condemn the monument, it moves the hour: « I preferred admiring the Colosseum at night, which is lit by a soft light that gives it back its glow. The perfect moment to stroll with your partner and take some pretty photos of the site ». The lit monument needs no ticket, no slot and no queue: it only needs you to still be in the district in the evening, which 557 metres make easy and a journey from the other side of Rome much less so.
  • In winter, the last admission falls at 3.30pm: From 25 October 2026 to 28 February 2027, the Colosseum opens at 8.30am, gives its last admission at 3.30pm and the park closes at 4.30pm. In other words, a winter day offers only seven hours of window, and a flight landing at midday leaves little margin for an afternoon slot. The 24 hour ticket also covers the Roman Forum and the Palatine, which are 399 metres away: if your Colosseum slot is in the afternoon, the Forum is what you do in the morning, and not the other way round.
  • Two of our members contradict each other on what you learn on site: labaroudeuzh writes that « without a guide, the visit is clearly useless because you do not have any information on site ». Ariane writes the opposite: « numerous signs also helped me better understand the history of the building and the Roman games ». We serve both without settling it, because both are real experiences, and because the difference probably comes down to the route taken. What Ariane adds helps you choose your ticket: what fascinated her was « the underground labyrinth, a complex of machinery worthy of a modern opera house », which the basic ticket does not include.
  • The street vendors, flagged twice: FloraC warns: « there are a lot of people though, and some pushy street vendors who might try to rip you off. Stay vigilant ». labaroudeuzh describes the same « ticket scalpers that flood the site ». The official ticket is bought online 30 days ahead, at $21*, and it covers three sites. That is the only useful answer to what our two members describe: anyone who holds their ticket and their slot has nothing to buy on the pavement.
Where not to stay near Colosseum
  • Arriving exactly at your slot time: the park asks you to be at the entrance 15 minutes early.
  • Planning a late visit in winter: from 25 October to 28 February, the last admission is at 3.30pm.
  • Buying your ticket from a street vendor: two of our members describe insistent resellers.
  • Counting on staying inside all morning: the time allowed runs from 75 to 90 minutes depending on the ticket.

FAQ: where to stay near Colosseum

Is it worth sleeping near the Colosseum?
For the visit itself, the difference is slim: it lasts 75 to 90 minutes and starts at the time on the ticket, wherever you sleep. What proximity buys is the evening, and it is our harshest review that says so: labaroudeuzh « preferred admiring the Colosseum at night ». From the Celio hill there are 557 to 864 metres, so a stroll after dinner. From the rest of Rome, you have to go back on purpose.
What are the opening hours?
From 25 October 2026 to 28 February 2027, opening at 8.30am, last admission at 3.30pm, the park closing at 4.30pm. Entry is at the time printed on the ticket, and the park recommends being at the gate 15 minutes early. The time you may spend inside the Colosseum runs from 75 to 90 minutes depending on the type of ticket.
How much does entry cost?
$21* for the 24 hour ticket covering the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine, and $2.30* at the reduced rate for European Union citizens aged 18 to 25. Tickets go on sale online 30 days before the visit date. Two of our members flag insistent resellers nearby: the official ticket is bought before you come.
The Celio or the rest of Rome?
The Celio for the evening and for the quarter of an hour early: three addresses from 557 to 864 metres, with the two best-scored locations in this guide, 9.8 and 9.7. The rest of Rome for the stay: six districts detailed in our city guide, tables everywhere, and the Roman Forum, included in the same ticket, 399 metres from the monument. What the Celio costs is a slope to climb and fewer restaurants.
Do you need a guide for the visit?
Our reviews do not agree. labaroudeuzh writes that « without a guide, the visit is clearly useless because you do not have any information on site »; Ariane says that « numerous signs » helped her « better understand the history of the building and the Roman games ». What is certain is that the underground Ariane found fascinating is not included in the basic ticket: it belongs to the Full Experience options, one of which admits groups of at most 25 people every 30 minutes.
Why no address elsewhere in Rome?
Because Rome has its own guide with us, with six districts detailed street by street, one of which is called « Monti, the Colosseum and the Imperial Forums ». Copying its addresses across to this page would make for an arbitrary extract, and this area's card leads straight there. This page keeps what it alone can say: how many metres separate your room from the monument, and whether you will be able to come back and see it lit up in the evening.
