Visiting the Picasso Museum
When your name is Picasso, a single building is not enough to house your legacy. It took five historic palaces dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries to properly honor the master. The Picasso Museum opened its doors in 1963 in the Ribera neighborhood. This setting, with its distinct Gothic aesthetic, creates an exceptional backdrop for the artist's work. His connection to Barcelona was no accident. Pablo Picasso arrived here at age 14 to spend his formative years, and he even held his first exhibitions in the city. It is a homecoming for an inspiration that never ran dry.
The Early Years of a Genius
The setting is opulent, reflecting the elegance typical of Catalonia and its Gothic architecture. Spread across three floors, you will find 4,300 works by Pablo Picasso, a collection that explains why this museum remains a constant draw. It is a masterful journey where the talent demands your full attention. While it is difficult to highlight one canvas over another, the precision of a young Picasso is undeniable, especially in works like Première Communion (First Communion) painted in 1896 or Science and Charity from 1897. These pieces are displayed alongside paintings primarily created between 1890 and 1917. While his later works are rare here, the incredible Las Meninas series is a definitive highlight. This is the only place in the world that holds the complete, 58-piece set inspired by Velázquez. Oil paintings, drawings, engravings, and ceramics are also on display, showcasing his creative genius across every medium he touched. Drawn from the personal collection of the artist, these masterpieces reveal a side of his work that is almost conventional, a facet we often forget when focused on the Picasso of Cubism and Surrealism.

I am not a huge Picasso fan, but I really liked this museum, which changed how I see the artist. I learned a lot of things about the painter's life, which helped me better understand the diversity of his work. The museum itself, located in an old palace, is gorgeous. I spent about an hour and a half there. A must-see to discover or rediscover Picasso.
