Visiting Park Güell
Located in the Gràcia neighborhood in Barcelona, Park Güell is a garden city created by the famous architect Antoni Gaudí, offering a stunning view of the capital of Catalonia and its coastline. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, it draws nearly 3 million visitors each year.
The ambitious vision of an industrialist in the early 20th century
Commissioned by the wealthy industrialist of the same name, this initial project for upscale residences built on the Del Carmel hill was meant to include about sixty homes and a chapel. Construction began in 1900 and had to stop 14 years later due to soaring costs. Across the 17-hectare site, only 4 houses, including the Gaudí House Museum, 3 fountains, a hall intended for a market, and the iconic Plaça de la Natura (Nature Square) featuring the world's longest bench, were actually built.
The park consists of 2 distinct areas: the Gaudí section, which requires a ticket, and the Mediterranean garden with its pine trees and aromatic plants, which is free to enter.
Gaudí's playground
His modernist style, which integrates and echoes the surrounding nature, creates an atmosphere where imagination takes center stage. Curved, gentle, whimsical, and dreamlike, it leaves no visitor indifferent. At the entrance, 2 mushroom-shaped houses greet you. Further in, fountain islands representing the world, a dragon head, and the most famous element, a salamander, offer a welcome splash of cool air on warm days.
At the top of the stairs, a hundred Greek columns symbolizing a forest form a hypostyle hall. The ceiling, outfitted with rainwater collection systems, is decorated with 4 ceramic suns. Walking alongside the hall brings you to the Plaça de la Natura, the highlight of the visit. Conceived as an agora, its dimensions measuring 86 meters long by 43 meters wide, combined with its 110-meter bench, have long made it one of the favorite spots for locals.
The Gaudí House Museum, built by his collaborator Francesc Berenguer, served as the final home of Catalonia's most famous architect. Since Park Güell is the city's most visited site right behind Las Ramblas and Sagrada Familia, book your ticket online in advance.
