Visiting Macao Beach
The Dominican Republic is a go-to for travelers hunting for turquoise water and soft, pale sand. Punta Cana delivers that classic postcard aesthetic, but the sheer volume of visitors can sometimes overwhelm the vibe. Macao Beach offers a necessary escape, standing out as one of the quieter stretches in this resort-heavy region.
A mostly preserved gem
Located on the eastern side of the island, Macao Beach remains largely untouched by the massive crowds found elsewhere. You get all the Caribbean essentials, turquoise water, clear blue skies, and white sand, making it feel like you are stepping directly into a travel magazine. For a long time, this was the only beach in the area without a massive hotel complex. That changed in February 2020 with the opening of the Dreams Macao Beach luxury resort. While locals might miss the days of total isolation, the beach remains relatively peaceful, and the addition of the resort has brought a new range of amenities to the area.
Activities at Macao Beach
Macao Beach is a well-known surf spot, making it a perfect place for beginners to take a lesson. If you already have some experience on a board, you can simply rent one and head straight into the waves. As with most of the Caribbean, you will have plenty of chances to go scuba diving and explore the local reefs.
If you prefer to stay dry, you can rent mountain bikes to ride through the surrounding landscape. If the heat makes biking feel like too much of a workout, you can also rent buggies, which are a faster and equally fun way to cover ground.
Plenty of activities in a beautiful setting, right in the heart of the Dominican Republic, what more could you ask for?
The turquoise colors of this beach are fantastic. And on the island it gets hot in the morning, then even hotter in the afternoon, but the wind picks up almost every day. So the temperature is bearable. Just watch out for sunburns!
