Visiting the Church of San Cataldo

Located on Piazza Bellini, this site might not grab your attention from the street, but once you spot it, the Church of San Cataldo commands focus. Its roof is crowned by three bright red domes that sit atop a rugged, cube-like structure. You will find that same shade of red on the crosses adorning the entrance door, providing a sharp contrast to the building's otherwise austere stone facade. This unique color palette signals that you are in for a singular experience. It would be a mistake to skip this gem of Arab-Norman architecture, which stands out as a rare beacon of historical integrity in Palermo. While many other religious buildings in the city have been heavily modified by Baroque restorations, this church remains true to its original 12th-century stone craftsmanship.

An authentic structure defined by its architecture

This church is the only remaining piece of the once-lavish complex belonging to Maione da Bari, the grand admiral to William I of Sicily. Built between 1154 and 1160, the church has seen a fascinating history. It was under the care of the Benedictines of Monreale until 1787, and remarkably, it served as a post office for a century afterward. The architect Giuseppe Patricolo is credited with restoring its initial structure and, more importantly, its medieval soul. In a city where gold leaf and intricate mosaics often dominate, the beauty of the Church of San Cataldo lies in its stark simplicity. While you will find a stunning floor mosaic, it is the only decorative element inside. The bare walls allow the architectural fusion of Arab and Norman styles, which define so much of Sicily, to take center stage. The interior layout is preserved with three naves separated by four columns that, along with the arches, support the signature red domes. Some of these columns feature carved capitals, creating a grand effect. The cross vaults add to the aesthetic, and the view from beneath the central cupola is impressive. For its atmosphere alone, the Church of San Cataldo is well worth your time.

A medieval style

Some might say it lacks charm with its stripped-back style (if you compare it to the other churches nearby!), but I liked it anyway. You have to pay to get in, about 2 euros or less if you do the church tour and have the "paper" they give you during your first visit to one of the sites. Anyway, I found it pretty in its difference, and I thought that little red cross was intriguing!
