Visiting the Louvre Museum in Paris

In the heart of Paris, situated between the pont Neuf and the Jardin des Tuileries, the Louvre Museum stands out for its immense historical and artistic scope. Housed in a former royal residence, it draws millions of visitors every year to view its cultural treasures.

An architecture layered with history

The Palais du Louvre (Louvre Palace) dates back to the 12th century, when Philippe Auguste ordered the construction of a fortress to defend the city. It was converted into a royal residence in the 14th century and gradually transformed into a museum following the French Revolution.

The Pavillon de l'Horloge (Clock Pavilion) documents this evolution, providing insight into eight centuries of history. The current architectural complex fuses medieval, Renaissance, and modern structures, most notably the iconic glass pyramid designed by Ieoh Ming Pei.

Unrivaled collections and essential masterpieces

With more than 35,000 works on display across eight departments, the Louvre offers an impressive path through human civilization. Among the most sought-after pieces are the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, the Venus de Milo, the Winged Victory of Samothrace, and Liberty Leading the People by Delacroix.

You will also find extensive collections of Greek, Roman, and Egyptian antiquities, works of Islamic art, medieval objets d'art, and sculptures spanning various eras.

Practical tips for a successful visit

  • The museum is vast, and attempting to see everything in one visit is unrealistic. Plan your route by checking the official website for open galleries or following one of the thematic tours (lasting between 30 minutes and 3 hours).
  • To bypass long lines, enter through the Carrousel du Louvre (accessible via the shopping mall) and book your tickets online. The free Affluences app also provides real-time wait times.
  • Exhibits are divided among the Denon, Sully, and Richelieu wings. Each wing offers clear pathways, though you are free to wander the galleries at your own pace.
  • If you are passing through Paris, you can easily schedule your visit for your arrival or departure day without lugging your bags around. Services such as Radical Storage provide luggage storage in Paris, including locations near the Louvre.
  • In the evening, the lighting in the cour Napoléon and the cour Carrée creates a distinct and often quieter atmosphere.

The Louvre is also included in our selection of the best museums to visit with family in Paris.

The most beautiful place for an art and history lover

As someone who is passionate about art and history, visits to the Louvre are always an excellent time. I will not be original in saying that the Italian painting gallery is my favorite area of the museum (and not just for the Mona Lisa!). For a long time, I was lucky enough to be able to go during the week, at less crowded times. The experience is even more pleasant there, because you have the leisure to stop in front of your favorite paintings and take the time to admire them.

A museum to visit at night

Without a doubt one of the most beautiful museums in the world. I have been going every year for almost 10 years and I probably still haven't seen all the works that are in there. My advice, go for the late-night openings on Wednesday and Saturday. The crowds are smaller and you will even be alone in some rooms!

The Louvre in one go? Mission impossible

The Louvre Museum is impressive in its size, and it is impossible to see everything in a single visit. I highly recommend booking your ticket online to avoid the long line at the entrance. I found that there were a huge number of visitors, which sometimes makes it difficult to appreciate the artwork in peace.

For a more authentic experience, it is better to move away from the most crowded areas like the one around the Mona Lisa. The lesser known masterpieces are often just as fascinating, and much more accessible. It is a must-see museum, but it is better to go while being aware of how crowded it gets.

A world-class museum

The Louvre is a world in itself. Like its reputation says, it is impossible to see everything in one day. I recommend that you do some research and book in advance. Plus, it is free for anyone under 26! Once you are there, you will discover that the Mona Lisa is a fairly small painting. But that is of course not everything, and there are many other monumental works! And definitely stop by the Tuileries nearby!

Must see and see again

The Louvre Museum is incredible. It is so vast that you will not have enough time in a single visit to see everything. Even though it attracts a huge crowd, you can explore quietly once you are inside. People gather around the most famous works, like the Mona Lisa, and leave the others behind. Do not hesitate to come back whenever you can.

An endless museum

Even though I have visited once a year for the past ten years, I still have not seen everything in the museum. The permanent collections are so vast that you could spend an entire week there. It is definitely better to do some research beforehand to plan your route. I especially enjoy the French, Italian, and Dutch paintings, which are not at all limited to famous works like the Mona Lisa. The section dedicated to Ancient Egypt is fascinating and also deserves a visit. However, it is impossible to avoid the crowds of tourists.

The Louvre, the perfect combo of Art and History

Visiting the Louvre means seeing hundreds of works of art, including the most famous ones like the Mona Lisa or the Venus de Milo, but it also means following the architectural evolution of this extraordinary building in the heart of the capital. In my opinion, you have to be hard to please not to appreciate the Louvre and its treasures. It is something to explore at your own pace, and over several visits given its vastness, as it is the largest museum in the world. A little tip to avoid the incredible line at the Pyramid entrance, whether you have a reservation or not: you can enter via the rue de Rivoli, through the Carrousel (the shopping center under the museum), or through the Porte des Lions near the Tuileries Garden. Hang in there, the wait is worth it!

I never get tired of it

I have been coming back to the Louvre regularly for years and I never get tired of it. Beyond the collections to see, there is a soothing atmosphere that reigns in this museum.

Disappointed by the Mona Lisa

The Louvre museum is very good. It is indisputably one of the must-see spots in Paris.

However, I have to admit I was disappointed by the Mona Lisa. All the buzz around it, all those people pushing to see it. You come for her, you plan your visit around it as the highlight... And in the end, no particular emotion when seeing it. I didn't get the feeling that the Mona Lisa was smiling at me personally, or that her eyes were following me. Other paintings impressed me much more.

I love it

Yes, for me the Louvre is a real treasure. It is impossible to see it all in one day, or even two, as it is overflowing with gems! Every time I go back, I discover a piece of art I had missed the previous time. You can't help but be surprised! It is magnificent from the outside too. I recommend coming very early in the morning if you do not want to wait in line for 3 hours, especially during tourist season (mmmh.. pretty much all year round in Paris, then!).

A magnificent setting

Just arriving from the Tuileries to the Pyramid, and then heading down to the basement, the setting will have you in awe.
Then, take your pick, the museum is huge and you will probably have a hard time seeing everything in one go.

Culture

You are never truly done visiting the Louvre. Several days wouldn't be enough to see everything, and that is exactly what makes it extraordinary! You really get the feeling that culture is infinite, and you are always discovering something new. A tip for those who are put off by long lines: it was closed for a long time, but if they have reopened it recently, think about going through the Porte des Lions. When everyone is rushing to the pyramid, people often forget about this second entrance, and as a result, there is no line.

A must-see!

The most famous museum in Paris. You have to visit this museum at least once to admire the superb painting collections. There are multiple exhibitions happening there throughout the year. Visiting the Louvre is also a great chance to walk through the museum while discovering its beautiful inner courtyard.

Plan on several days

The Louvre Museum is simply breathtaking!
But it is also huge. It is impossible to admire everything in just a few hours. The ideal thing is to dedicate several days to it so you don't have to rush through your visit. Especially during the night openings, you won't be caught off guard checking your watch.
But wear your sneakers...

A must see and see again

I love this museum because the Royal Palace setting is magnificent and really highlights the artwork. The vibe is cool too, with tourists coming from all over the world, it feels like going on a trip.

Finally, I cannot forget the main thing: the collections displayed in the many galleries of the museum. They are very diverse, with masterpieces like the Mona Lisa known all over the world, from many eras and many continents. You can easily split your visit to the museum over several days because there is so much to see.

A huge museum in a royal palace

What is really interesting about this world-famous museum is that everything is out of the ordinary: the museum environment (the Pyramid, the Tuileries, the Carrousel...), the building that houses the museum (a former royal palace), and finally, the immense collections that are inside.
