Munich's Allianz Arena

Where to stay near Allianz Arena: the 3 areas to know in 2026

Our two members did not visit the Allianz Arena in the same year, and they reach the same verdict. The one from 2019 finds that the outer shell “makes you think of a plastic tarp covering scaffolding” and adds: “it looks cheap, at least during the day”. The one from 2024 quotes him and agrees, before adding that “it is better in the evening with the lighting”. Both change their minds once inside: steep stands, right on top of the pitch, and light shows that amount to a performance.

This stadium is therefore to be seen after dark, which turns the way back into a question. Good news: the 13.5 kilometres separating it from Marienplatz are covered without a change on the U6 line. Three areas share that line: Garching-Hochbrück one stop away, Schwabing halfway, the Altstadt at the end.

Garching-Hochbrück, one stop to the north One metro stop beyond the stadium, outside Munich

For anyone wanting the shortest trip and the lightest bill

Hochbrück is a slice of business park set on the U6, north of the stadium, and three chain houses make up the whole of its offer. The arithmetic is simple: one metro stop to Fröttmaning, then the walk across the esplanade, and a bill with no relation to the centre's. The downside is quickly said: the evenings here are empty, and by road it takes 9.5 kilometres to get back to the stadium, against a single metro stop.

the stands are well-designed, close to the pitch, steep, and imposing

Schwabing, on the stadium line 9.4 kilometres away, around Münchner Freiheit

For anyone wanting a lively district without giving up the direct metro

Schwabing lines up the cafés of the Leopoldstraße, the bookshops and the edge of the English Garden, and the U6 runs through it: this is the middle ground of the guide, a real district 9.4 kilometres from the stands with the stadium at the end of the same line. The historic centre is not at the door, but it is four stops away, and the two houses chosen here carry location marks their guests call excellent.

The Altstadt and the central station 13.5 kilometres away, at the end of the same metro line

For anyone coming for Munich and adding a match

This is where the city of 1,260,391 lives: the covered market, the beer halls, the museums, and a central station 13 kilometres from the stands that takes trains from the whole country. The U6 links Marienplatz to Fröttmaning without a change, which strips the stadium of the drawback of its location. The three addresses below run from a hostel to a historic hotel, and their location marks reach 9.8, a high point for this page.

Our tips for booking the right place

  • Plan the stadium visit for after dark: Our two members, five years apart, find the exterior disappointing by day and a success in the evening, when the façade panels light up: there are 1,056 of them and they can take 16 million colours. If your stay holds no match, take the tour at the end of the day, and keep the evening to come back and see the shell lit from the esplanade. It costs nothing, and the building only keeps its promises at that hour.
  • The club museum occupies the stadium, and it closes early: The FC Bayern Museum opens every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., last admission at 5.15 p.m., with special hours on match days. The museum alone asks $14* and about an hour and a half; with the tour of the ground, count $29* and two and a half hours. One of our members, who had seen the inside only this way, keeps it as the best memory of his day: the stands impress and the translucent roof is well done.
  • The U6 does everything, and the arithmetic is turned around: The stadium is out on the edge, 13.5 kilometres from Marienplatz, but the U6 line links the centre to Fröttmaning without a change, and from there fifteen minutes of walking lead to the stands. Put another way, sleeping in town does not cost a taxi: proximity is paid for here in empty evenings, not in complicated journeys. Plenty of other stadiums impose the opposite.
Where not to stay near Allianz Arena
  • Choosing Hochbrück to go out in the evening: warehouses and offices, the city is elsewhere.
  • Judging the stadium from a daytime photo: our two members find it disappointing at that hour, and a success as soon as the façade lights up.
  • Booking at the end of September or the start of October without checking the Oktoberfest dates: the city fills up, and the rates rise with it.

FAQ: where to stay near Allianz Arena

Sleep near the Allianz Arena or inside Munich?
Inside Munich, unless price decides. The U6 line links Marienplatz to Fröttmaning without a change, so the centre only adds sixteen metro minutes, with a whole city in exchange. Hochbrück, one stop from the stadium, offers the cheapest rates in this guide, but nothing to do in the evening; Schwabing, 9.4 kilometres out, holds the middle with real cafés and the same line.
How do you reach the stadium by public transport?
By the U6 metro line, Fröttmaning station, then fifteen minutes of walking across the esplanade. One of our members mentions a tram: none goes up to the stadium, it is indeed the metro that serves the ground, and it leaves from Marienplatz as readily as from Schwabing.
How many seats does the Allianz Arena hold?
75,024. Our members speak of “massive stands”, of stands that are “steep, imposing” and very close to the pitch, and that is what makes them change their minds after finding the exterior unremarkable.
Is the lit façade worth it?
It is the reason for the evening visit. The ground is entirely clad in ETFE cushions kept permanently inflated, including 1,056 side panels that light up and can take 16 million colours. By day, our two members see a tarp over scaffolding; once lit, the same building amounts to a show.
Can you visit the stadium without a match?
Yes, and one of our members knew the inside only that way. The FC Bayern Museum opens every day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., last admission at 5.15 p.m.; the museum alone asks $14* and about an hour and a half, the museum with the tour of the ground $29* and two and a half hours. Hours change on match days.
What is left to see once the match is over?
Little: the esplanade, the club museum and a business park. The rest lies inside Munich, sixteen metro minutes away: the covered market, the beer halls, the Pinakotheken, the English Garden on the edge of Schwabing, and the Olympic park 10.4 kilometres from the stands. Our guide “Where to stay in Munich” covers them one by one; here we stick to the stadium.
