Visiting Place de la Comédie, the heart of Montpellier

Located in the center of Montpellier, Place de la Comédie serves as the main meeting point for residents and visitors alike. Lined with Haussmann-style buildings, filled with sidewalk cafes, and crossed by the tramway, it is a primary stop for anyone exploring the city.

A square steeped in history

The square takes its name from the Opéra Comédie, which has anchored the southern end since the 18th century. Rebuilt multiple times following fires, it remains a cornerstone of the local cultural scene. In the center stands the Fontaine des Trois Grâces (Fountain of the Three Graces), sculpted in 1773 and now one of the primary symbols of Montpellier. The elegant facades surrounding it mirror the era when the city experienced a major economic surge.

A lively spot at any hour

During the day, street performers provide a lively atmosphere while cafes and restaurants draw crowds looking to enjoy the sun. At night, the lighting highlights the architecture, and the mood shifts to something more festive. The square also functions as a central hub for the tram network, making it a convenient base for navigating the city.

Nearby points of interest

From the square, you have easy access to the Écusson (the historical center of Montpellier), known for its medieval alleys and shops. A short walk away, the Esplanade Charles-de-Gaulle offers a quieter, tree-lined space for a stroll. If you are looking for a view, the Promenade du Peyrou is reachable in about ten minutes and provides a vantage point over Montpellier from the heights.

Very lively spot

Place de la Comédie is basically the center of Montpellier, perfect for starting to explore the city. It is a very lively square where there are always people around. There are also a few cafes and restaurants. The buildings all around are really pretty and well preserved.

A place full of life

I spent many years vacationing in Montpellier when I was a child and a teenager. I go back regularly, and even as an adult, I still get just as much pleasure from coming to have lunch on this square or simply walking through it. At night, there are very often street performers putting on shows, which brings so much life to the place. Convenient (served by the tram) and very pretty, the Place de la Comédie is a must-see in Montpellier!

The heart of Montpellier

Beautiful square! Its atmosphere and buildings with gray, Haussmann-style roofs give it a bit of a Parisian vibe. With shops, movie theaters, and brasseries, it is the perfect meeting spot to grab a drink on a terrace. Now completely pedestrianized, the square, adorned by its lovely Three Graces statue, is also very pleasant to walk around. I recommend going back to see it lit up at night.

A spot not to be missed

During my visit to Montpellier, I was charmed by the Place de la Comédie, the heart of the city. It is a vibrant, lively place. The sidewalk cafes and restaurants that line the square are perfect for taking a break, having a drink, or enjoying a good meal. I also enjoyed strolling through the surrounding pedestrian streets, which are ideal for shopping or just walking around.
At the end of the square stands the Opéra Comédie, a magnificent building that adds a cultural touch to the whole area.
And the icing on the cake, the tram drops you off right next to it, which makes getting there extremely easy, even without a car.
In short, a really great discovery! A place not to be missed if you are passing through Montpellier.

Great square in the center of Montpellier

Considered the central square of Montpellier, you will find some of the most upscale buildings in the city here, such as the opera house, which features beautiful architecture.
Several café and restaurant terraces line the square. Why stop for a drink, there is plenty of space and you are not crammed in next to cars.
Easy to get to by tram.
