Madrid's New Santiago Bernabéu Stadium (2024 Renovation)

Where to stay near Santiago Bernabéu Stadium: the 3 areas to know in 2026

Our five members are not talking about the same stadium, and that is the best reason to read this page. In 2022, one of them found at the Santiago Bernabéu not “some exceptional atmosphere” but “the very special vibe of a knowledgeable crowd”, one that had been coming “from generation to generation”. In 2024, another walked in after the roof went on: “it feels like the stands go all the way to the sky”, and the sound of the fans resonates. Between the two, a rebuild carried out from 2019 to 2025.

That leaves the question of where to sleep, and one detail settles it more surely than the rates: the stadium's metro station is closed for works, and will not reopen before 2027. Three areas, then: the foot of the stands on the Castellana, the lived-in district of Chamberí 1.5 kilometres away, and central Madrid 5 kilometres off.

The two ways to stay near Santiago Bernabéu Stadium

The rebuild changed the stadium, not its geography: it is still 5 kilometres from the Madrid people visit, and its metro station is closed.

What changes Walking distance from the stands In the centre
After the match You cross the avenue A bus, a taxi, or Cuzco on foot
Dinner The office canteens, and the hotel All of Madrid, until midnight
The price of a night A business rate, gentler at the weekend From a dorm bed to a grand hotel
The stadium's metro Closed: here you do without it Closed: you need a fallback
Arriving by plane 20.1 kilometres from terminal 4 The airport train into the centre
The next day The club museum and the trophy room The Prado, the Plaza Mayor, the terraces
Review volume From one thousand to five thousand eight hundred stays Up to twenty-one thousand
Who it suits Anyone coming first of all for the match Anyone coming for the city, match included

How long to the entrance, area by area?

What follows is measured by road, starting from the stands. As long as the stadium's station is closed, the useful stops are Cuzco, 700 metres away, and Nuevos Ministerios.

From Time How
The Paseo de la Castellana, outside the stadium on foot walking
You cross the Castellana, nothing more.
Nuevos Ministerios and Chamberí 1.5 km walking or metro
Some twenty minutes along the avenue.
Gran Vía and the Puerta del Sol 5 km metro, bus or taxi
Count on one change, and a fallback for the way back.

The Paseo de la Castellana, outside the stadium At the foot of the stands, in the office district of Chamartín

For anyone who wants to depend on no transport on a match night

The stadium sits on the widest avenue in Madrid, among corporate headquarters: you step out of the hotel, you cross, you are at the stands. The district lives by office hours and empties in the evening, except on match nights, which is why rates are often gentler at the weekend than midweek. With the stadium's station under works, what you buy here is no longer just comfort: it is not having to work out how to get back.

Nuevos Ministerios and Chamberí 1.5 kilometres away, where metro lines and suburban trains meet

For anyone wanting a lived-in district and the airport without a change

Chamberí is lived in day to day: grocers, pavement terraces, and restaurants whose takings do not depend on the fixture list. At its northern end, Nuevos Ministerios gathers three metro lines and the suburban trains, including the one that reaches the airport without a change, and the bus replacing line 10 during the works starts from there. The stands are 1.5 kilometres away, or 20 minutes of pavement along the Castellana.

Our tips for booking the right place

  • The stadium's station is closed, and that takes planning: Santiago Bernabéu station, on line 10, has been under works since February 2024. Since the end of March 2026 the line has not run at all between Nuevos Ministerios and Cuzco: a bus covers the section. The Community of Madrid announces the return of the trains at the end of December 2026, but with no stop at the Bernabéu, and the opening of the station in the first quarter of 2027. In practice: check the state of the service the day before, aim for Cuzco, 700 metres from the stands, and know that a hotel within walking distance of the stadium spares you all of it.
  • Two stadiums in five reviews, and the roof is the turning point: The rebuild was carried out from 2019 to 2025, the bulk of it finished at the end of 2024: retractable roof, retractable pitch stored underground, video screen all the way round. Our reviews keep the trace of it: in 2022, a member described a crowd of connoisseurs rather than a cauldron; in 2024, another, who walked in after the roof went on, speaks of stands going up to the sky and a sound that resonates, in an intense atmosphere where he felt safe. A last one, in 2026, sees above all a money machine: the cheapest seat is dear, the screens carry advertising and the VIP areas eat up space. All three are right.
  • The stadium doubles as a concert venue, and that has become a neighbourhood matter: Madrid city hall postponed every concert at the stadium in September 2024, after complaints from residents about the noise. The club had the venue soundproofed, put up acoustic screens and imposed an 11 p.m. curfew; in May 2026 the Madrid provincial court ruled out its criminal liability, placing compliance on the organisers. Large concerts remain heavily restricted: for anyone sleeping in the district, that means quiet evenings outside match days, and a point to check with the hotel if the programming resumes.
Where not to stay near Santiago Bernabéu Stadium
  • Counting on the stadium's station: it is closed, and so is the section serving it, since the end of March 2026.
  • Choosing the Castellana to go out in the evening: these are offices, and life is held in the centre.
  • Booking a late ride back to the centre without looking at it: 5 kilometres after a match means a bus, a taxi or a walk to Cuzco.

FAQ: where to stay near Santiago Bernabéu Stadium

Sleep near the Bernabéu or in central Madrid?
At the foot of the stands if the match is your reason for coming: you cross the Castellana, and the closed metro station does not concern you. In the centre if Madrid draws you as much as the football: the Puerta del Sol is 5 kilometres away, the range runs from a dorm bed to the twenty-seventh floor, and location marks climb higher there than anywhere else. Between the two, Chamberí offers a lived-in district 1.5 kilometres out.
Does the metro go to the stadium?
Not for the moment. Santiago Bernabéu station, on line 10, has been under works since February 2024, and the Nuevos Ministerios to Cuzco section has been closed since the end of March 2026, covered by a replacement bus. The return of the trains is announced for the end of December 2026, with no stop at the Bernabéu, and the opening of the station for the first quarter of 2027. The useful stop meanwhile is Cuzco, 700 metres from the stands.
How many seats does the Santiago Bernabéu hold?
The club has never published it since the rebuild, and the figures in circulation do not agree: 78,297 seats in the FIFA report, 81,044 in the redevelopment project, 83,186 quoted by LaLiga. The gap comes from the hospitality boxes, the retractable pitch and which sections are open depending on the configuration.
What did the rebuild change?
Carried out from 2019 to 2025, the bulk of it finished at the end of 2024, it added a retractable roof, a retractable pitch stored underground and a video screen running all the way round. Our members put it better than any press release: before, a crowd of connoisseurs rather than a cauldron; after, stands going up to the sky and a sound that resonates.
What is there to do at the stadium outside a match?
The stadium tour opens the club museum, the trophy room, the dressing rooms and the edge of the pitch. One of our members recommends it without reservation: there is more than the stands and the grass, and it is impressive. Count one to two hours, and book the slot before you arrive.
Are there concerts, and do they make noise at night?
The city hall postponed every concert in September 2024 after complaints from residents, and large concerts have remained heavily restricted since. The club soundproofed the venue and imposed an 11 p.m. curfew, and in May 2026 the Madrid courts placed compliance on the organisers. Outside match days the district is therefore quiet in the evening, which stands to reason for an office quarter.
