Prado Museum

Where to stay near Prado Museum: the 2 areas to know in 2026

The Prado is free for its last two hours: from 6pm to 8pm Monday to Saturday, from 5pm to 7pm on Sundays. And all eleven of our reviews repeat that one visit is not enough. Ariane: « it is impossible to see everything, even in one day, so you have to make some choices », and she advises counting « at least three hours ». MathildeFlor and Emilee write the same sentence: « plan on several hours ».

Two free hours, repeated three evenings, therefore beat one paid day at $17*, on one condition: being able to go back without transport. That is the whole point of these pages, and it can be measured: the art triangle fits inside 648 metres, from the Prado to the Reina Sofía by way of the Thyssen.

The two ways to stay near Prado Museum

General admission costs $17*, and it is free for the last two hours: from 6pm to 8pm Monday to Saturday, from 5pm to 7pm on Sundays and public holidays. What is being decided here is how many times you will be able to come back.

How long to the entrance, area by area?

These distances are STRAIGHT LINES, calculated from the position of each address and that of the museum: the public OSRM server has no walking profile, and on the Paseo del Prado a driving route would follow a one-way axis that teaches a walker nothing. No walking time is served.

From Time How
The Paseo del Prado and the Barrio de las Letras 197 to 583 m on foot
The Thyssen is 339 metres from the Prado, the Reina Sofía 648.
The rest of Madrid, from Sol to Salamanca beyond 803 m on foot or by metro
The Retiro park is 803 metres from the museum, the Puerta del Sol 1,014.

The Paseo del Prado and the Barrio de las Letras From 197 to 583 metres, the Thyssen at 339

Anyone planning to come back during the free hours

Four addresses between 197 and 583 metres from the museum, which is to say the distance that lets you go back at 6pm without thinking about it, then head out to dinner. The Thyssen is 339 metres away and the Reina Sofía 648: the three museums of the triangle are walkable from any of them. In exchange, this is a district of museums and offices: the Paseo del Prado is a wide, busy avenue, not a village street.

Remember to book your tickets in advance and count on at least three hours for your visit

The rest of Madrid, from Sol to Salamanca Beyond 1,014 metres for the Puerta del Sol

Anyone who comes for Madrid first

The Puerta del Sol is 1,014 metres from the museum, the Retiro park 803: in other words the whole centre is within walking distance, and it is Madrid you have come to see. It has its own guide with us, six districts detailed street by street, including the Prado's own: the card below leads there, and we copy none of its addresses across. What this area costs is one more journey every evening, if you are counting on the 6pm free entry.

One of the most beautiful museums in the world. Not only is the building incredibly beautiful, but the collection inside is vast, varied, and very interesting

Madrid Stay in the city Where to stay in Madrid Madrid has its own guide: neighbourhoods, prices, our recommended hotels.

  • Six districts detailed in our Madrid guide
  • The Retiro park 803 metres from the museum
  • Room rates that fall with the distance

Cons

  • One more journey for every free hour
  • No address served here, by choice

Our tips for booking the right place

  • The last two hours are free, and our reviews explain why that is the right strategy: Admission is free from 6pm to 8pm Monday to Saturday, and from 5pm to 7pm on Sundays and public holidays. That window answers exactly what our members describe. Ariane: « the only downside is that it is impossible to see everything, even in one day, so you have to make some choices ». La Plume Vagabonde: « you would probably need a full day to really appreciate its collections ». MathildeFlor and Emilee both write « plan on several hours ». Three evenings of two hours beat one day in a row, and the $17* general admission then becomes optional. You still have to sleep close enough to go back without thinking about it: 197 metres for the nearest of our four addresses, 1,014 from the Puerta del Sol.
  • Guernica is not at the Prado, and one of our reviews gets it wrong: Jean Luc writes « the centrepiece: Picasso's Guernica ». The painting is not at the Prado: it is at the Reina Sofía museum, room 205.10, on the second floor of the Sabatini building, where the Spanish State installed it after acquiring it in 1992. The confusion is common, and it costs a whole visit to anyone who makes it. The good news is that the Reina Sofía is 648 metres from the Prado, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza 339: all three fit into the same day, on foot, which is this district's main argument.
  • What our members go to see, and what they advise choosing: Since choices have to be made, here is what our reviews cite. Ariane: « I focused on European painting and I still have wonderful paintings by Velasquez in my memory, like Las Meninas ». La Plume Vagabonde is the most categorical: « I would personally recommend it only for the chance to see Goya's Black Paintings in person. This series is absolutely unforgettable, of rare power ». Bill lists works, among them « Saturn Devouring One of His Sons (a bit gore) », and cites « Velasquez, Goya, Rubens, El Greco ». espolonista sums up the holdings as « the best art collection of the 17th and 18th centuries ».
  • The building counts as much as the rooms, according to two of our members: MathildeFlor writes « the building is truly magnificent, it feels like you are in a palace ». La Plume Vagabonde says the same thing differently: « the Prado Museum is extremely rich, the building is magnificent ». Petite-Terre goes further: « one of the most beautiful museums in the world. Not only is the building incredibly beautiful, but the collection inside is vast, varied, and very interesting ». That is one more reason to walk past it several times, and a way of getting value from a room next door even when the rooms inside are closed.
  • The one guarded review of the set, and what it says: Across eleven reviews, nine give 5 out of 5. The most guarded is Wouter's, 4 out of 5: « a Madrid classic, with masterpieces of classic art... a bit classic if you ask me, but something you have to do at least once ». Sophielondon, also 4 out of 5, sums it up in one line: « different art movements, different centuries, very complete ». In other words, nobody advises against the visit; what is debated is how much time to give it, and that is exactly what the free evening hours let you adjust.
Where not to stay near Prado Museum
  • Paying $17* without checking the time: admission is free for the last two hours, every day.
  • Looking for Guernica at the Prado: the painting is at the Reina Sofía museum, 648 metres away.
  • Planning a single visit: four of our members say one day is not enough.
  • Turning up after 7pm on a Sunday: that day the museum closes at 7pm.

FAQ: where to stay near Prado Museum

Is it worth sleeping near the Prado museum?
Yes if you plan to use the free hours, and that is the only real criterion. Admission is free from 6pm to 8pm Monday to Saturday, and all our members say one visit is not enough. From the four addresses on this page there are 197 to 583 metres, so you go back without thinking about it. From the Puerta del Sol there are 1,014 metres, and the journey gets decided afresh every evening.
What are the opening hours?
Monday to Saturday from 10am to 8pm, Sundays and public holidays from 10am to 7pm. The last two hours are free in both cases: from 6pm to 8pm on weekdays and Saturday, from 5pm to 7pm on Sundays and public holidays.
How much does entry cost?
$17* for general admission, and nothing at all during the last two opening hours. Ariane also advises to « book your tickets in advance » and to « count on at least three hours for your visit »: the two pieces of advice go together, since three hours do not fit inside the free window.
Can the art triangle be done on foot?
Yes, and that is this district's argument: the Thyssen-Bornemisza is 339 metres from the Prado, the Reina Sofía 648. The three museums are therefore visited in the same day with no transport, and it is at the Reina Sofía that Guernica hangs, in room 205.10, which one of our members mistakenly places at the Prado.
How much time should I set aside?
At least three hours according to Ariane, « several hours » according to MathildeFlor and Emilee, « probably a full day » according to La Plume Vagabonde. Ariane adds the only genuinely useful sentence: « it is impossible to see everything, even in one day, so you have to make some choices ». The free evening hours let you make those choices across several days instead of one.
Why no address elsewhere in Madrid?
Because Madrid has its own guide with us, with six districts detailed street by street, from Sol to Salamanca by way of Malasaña and La Latina, one of which is called « Retiro, Prado and Barrio de las Letras ». Copying its addresses across to this page would make for an arbitrary extract, and this area's card leads straight there. This page keeps what it alone can say: how many metres separate your room from the museum, and how many times you will be able to come back for free.
