Things to do in Brisbane: must-see attractions

Visiting Brisbane, the City of Sun and Adventure

Located on the east coast of Australia, Brisbane is a go-to for travelers looking for a high-energy city with a subtropical climate that stays comfortable year-round. As the country's third-largest city behind Sydney and Melbourne, Brisbane balances a laid-back vibe with urban intensity, making it a natural stop on any Australian itinerary. If you are weighing a trip to this sun-drenched metropolis, here is what you can expect.

A seamless mix of nature and city

Brisbane stands out for how it integrates natural landscapes with urban life. The Brisbane River winds through the heart of the city, providing skyline views and plenty of outdoor space. South Bank is a primary draw, featuring public spaces that include man-made beaches, gardens, and riverside dining. You can stroll through the South Bank Parklands or take a dip in the Streets Beach lagoon, all while staying within walking distance of the city center.

For outdoor enthusiasts, Mount Coot-tha Reserve is a short drive away, offering rainforest hiking trails with views that stretch all the way to Moreton Bay. Don't miss the city Botanic Gardens, a quiet spot dedicated to local flora and fauna.

A flourishing cultural scene

Brisbane is a major cultural hub. The Queensland Cultural Centre in South Bank houses several notable institutions, including the Queensland Art Gallery and the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), both of which host international and Australian exhibitions. If you want to dive into the history of Queensland and its people, the Queensland Museum covers everything from early explorers to the stories of Indigenous peoples.

The city also maintains a full calendar of events, most notably the Brisbane Festival in September, which brings dance, theater, and fireworks displays to the city skyline.

Breathtaking adventures

The Queensland capital serves as an ideal base for exploring the surrounding natural wonders. If you are looking to get on the water, head to Moreton Bay, where you can swim with dolphins, snorkel around Moreton Island, or dive near underwater shipwrecks. For an adrenaline rush, try the Story Bridge climb, which rewards you with a panoramic view of the city and the river.

The golden beaches of the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast are an easy drive away, offering miles of sand for surfing or relaxing. For a wilder experience, the World Heritage-listed Lamington National Park is packed with waterfalls, hiking trails, and high biodiversity.

When to go

The best time to visit Brisbane is between May and September, during the Australian winter. The weather is mild and sunny, with temperatures hovering around 68°F (20°C), making it perfect for exploring. Try to avoid the summer months (December to February), which can be quite hot and humid, with a higher chance of heavy rainfall.

How to get there

Brisbane has an international airport (BNE) located about a 20-minute drive from the city center. Travelers from the US typically connect through major hubs like Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Dallas, or via international transit points like Singapore or Tokyo. Total travel time often ranges from 16 to 22 hours depending on your connection.

Great home base for visiting an awesome coastline

Brisbane is one of the big Australian cities located in a tropical part of the country. At the end of the year, meaning during the Australian summer, it gets hot and humid. For working, it is not necessarily pleasant. For enjoying the coast, it is top notch! Plus, you can do it all year round (unlike in the south of the country).

Actually, the Great Barrier Reef is not far, and Fraser Island too (for ecotourism fans). In short, from Brisbane, there are really many excursions that are worth the trip for lovers of the beach, snorkeling, diving, nature, etc...

As for the city itself, it is less bling than in Sydney, and less stressed than in Melbourne. Anyway, the residents of the city gave me the impression that they do not take themselves too seriously.
