Visiting Antalya, where sea meets mountains and history
A charming old town
The historic Kaleiçi district sits at the heart of Antalya. It draws visitors in with its cobblestone alleys, restored Ottoman houses, and small craft boutiques. The Hadrian's Gate, which dates back to the Roman era, marks the entrance to this picturesque old town. As you wander, you will find shaded squares, gardens, and cafes where you can soak up the local atmosphere.
Beaches and water sports
Antalya is known for its beaches. Konyaaltı, reachable right from the city center, is popular for its fine pebbles and clear water. Lara Beach, located further east, offers modern amenities and plenty of water sports. Scuba diving enthusiasts can explore the seabed, while paragliding over the Mediterranean guarantees an adrenaline rush similar to the coastal views you would find along the cliffs of Big Sur.
Historical and cultural sites
The city houses several museums, including the Antalya Archaeological Museum, famous for its collection of ancient artifacts, particularly sculptures from nearby sites like Perge or Termessos. For a deeper dive into history, visit the Yivli Minaret, a symbol of the city, or the Clock Tower that overlooks the main square. In the surrounding area, the ruins of Perge and the well-preserved Aspendos Amphitheatre make for worthwhile excursions.
Culinary specialties to discover
Antalya’s gastronomy blends Mediterranean and Turkish flavors. piyaz, a white bean salad with a tahini sauce, is a local staple. You should also try the local-style kebab, often served with fresh vegetables and yogurt. For dessert, look for cevizli sucuk, a treat made of walnuts coated in grape molasses.
When to go
The best time to visit Antalya is between April and June, or between September and November, when the weather is mild and pleasant. Summer months are very hot, though they are ideal for beach activities. In December, the city hosts the Antalya International Film Festival, which is a draw for culture enthusiasts.
How to get there
Antalya Airport is well connected with direct flights from many European cities. The flight from Paris takes about 4 hours, with round-trip fares starting at around 150 TRY (about $4.50) depending on the season. Once you arrive, buses and taxis make it easy to reach the city center or your hotel.
A Turkish city focused on beach tourism... That doesn't necessarily sound appealing, but it is done intelligently. There are no concrete high-rises to pack in thousands of travelers in the summer, so the city remains human-scale and relatively authentic. A great destination to enjoy the sun and the sea!
