Where to stay in the Costa Dorada: the 4 areas to know in 2026

On the Costa Dorada, what you've come for decides where you sleep. For PortAventura and the big beaches, it's Salou or La Pineda, a few minutes from the park. For fish and a harbour that still lives from fishing, it's Cambrils. For Rome, museums and the train, it's Tarragona. And for peace and quiet, the small beaches of Altafulla, further north.

In Tarragona's old town, a simple, well-placed room goes for around $101*. A hotel near the beach in Cambrils or Salou is about $169* a night in summer, while a PortAventura hotel with park entry often tops $290*. The coastal train links all these bases: you can change your mind without changing hotels.

One base or several?

The coastal train takes under an hour from Calafell to Cambrils: one base is enough to see it all, two if you want to separate the park and the city.

  • A long weekend: A single base, in Tarragona: the ruins, the old town, and a day at the beach or PortAventura by train.
  • Four or five days: A single base, in Cambrils or La Pineda: PortAventura, the beaches, and Tarragona half an hour away.
  • One week: Two bases: three nights in Tarragona for Rome and Reus, then four in Cambrils or Altafulla for the sea.

How much driving between two bases?

Times by car, outside summer traffic. The regional train also links most of these towns, often just as fast.

Route Driving time Good to know

Salou and La Pineda Salou, its Llevant and Ponent beaches, Cap Salou, La Pineda and the centre of Vila-seca

for PortAventura and family beaches

The beach heart of the coast. Salou lines up its sandy beaches in front of a palm-lined promenade, and the coves of Cap Salou hide to the south. To the east, La Pineda is calmer, and the old centre of Vila-seca keeps its castle. PortAventura is five minutes away. The downside: crowds and noise in August, and whole streets of souvenir shops.

I was expecting a sleepy commuter town for tourists coming to PortAventura, but not at all. It has a cute old town

Cambrils and Miami Platja Cambrils, its harbour and beaches, Mont-roig del Camp, Miami Platja and L'Hospitalet de l'Infant

for fish, the harbour and calmer beaches

The coast's dining table. Cambrils lives around its harbour, where the fish auction takes place in the afternoon and restaurants serve the catch just landed. Its beaches are long and quieter than in neighbouring Salou. Further south, Miami Platja has small coves of red sand. The downside: little going on in the evening, and a car to get beyond the harbour.

Tarragona Tarragona's old town, the Rambla Nova, the Serrallo harbour, Arrabassada beach, and Reus a quarter of an hour away

for Rome, museums and the train

The Roman city. In the old town of Tarragona, you sleep between the amphitheatre, the circus and the cathedral, ten minutes' walk from the station. In the evening the Rambla Nova fills up, and the Serrallo harbour serves the fishermen's catch. Reus, Gaudí's town, is a quarter of an hour away. The downside: the city beaches are small, and you take the train for the big ones.

Altafulla and the northern coast Altafulla, Torredembarra, Creixell, Roda de Berà, Coma-ruga, Calafell and Cunit

for peace and Barcelona an hour away

The quiet coast. Altafulla keeps its walled village and castle above a beach lined with fishermen's houses. Further north, Torredembarra, Coma-ruga and Calafell roll out long beaches, and the Roman arch of Berà stands by the roadside. Barcelona is an hour away by train. The downside: PortAventura is half an hour away, and evenings are quiet.

Our tips for booking the right place

  • Stay outside Salou: PortAventura is five minutes from Salou, but also from La Pineda and Cambrils, which are quieter at night. You get calmer nights without longer trips to the park.
  • Pick a hotel near a station: The coastal train links Tarragona, Salou, Cambrils, Altafulla and Calafell, and PortAventura has its own station. A hotel a few minutes' walk from a stop saves you hunting for parking in summer.
  • Book the park with the hotel: PortAventura resort hotels include park entry. For a ride-focused stay, compare that price with a hotel in town plus tickets: the gap is often small.
Where not to stay in the Costa Dorada
  • Booking in central Salou in August for a quiet stay: the resort lives by night all summer.
  • Staying by the motorway to pay less: you lose the beach on foot and the train.
  • Coming in winter for the sea: most Salou hotels close from November to March.
