Old Carnac spans just a few streets around its church and market square, and paths to the alignments start right from there. Three of our members, each on their own, share the exact same advice: book a guided tour, because fences keep visitors at a distance from the stones the rest of the time. The town stays lived-in off-season, with its bakery and market, long after the beach empties out. Its limits are defined by its classification: 6 hotels operate here, none above 3 stars, and it takes 1,5 kilometre to reach the sand.
Three sites are open to visitors, Le Ménec, Kermario, and Kerlescan. I strongly recommend taking a guided tour to better understand the archaeology and myths behind these incredible structures.

The sea right outside your windows
A beach resort laid out at the beginning of the last century, complete with villas, boulevard de la Plage, and a thalassotherapy center. This is where comfort took root, as all 4 of the town's 4-star hotels are located here, including one massive property with 205 rooms, nearly four times the size of the runner-up. Bike paths follow the coastline toward the Bay of Quiberon, making cycling much more pleasant than driving. The catch comes down to one sentence: the standing stones are 1.5 kilometres away and the neighborhood really only comes alive in season.
It is especially nice to explore them by bike, taking advantage of the bike paths that run along the coast and offer amazing views of the Baie de Quiberon.

On the flip side, the neighborhood lacks both the street life of the village and the direct waterfront views, requiring a walk in either direction just to grab dinner.

Our tips for booking the right place
- Check the calendar before the neighborhood: That is the first thing to look at, and it does not show up in any photo. Campgrounds account for 2,490 pitches compared to just 499 hotel rooms, meaning five times more beds, and they operate on strict seasonal dates. Three operators publish theirs: May 16 to September 19, April 18 to September 2, and April 1 to October 31. Hotel pools follow the same logic, with the one at Tumulus only open from mid-May to mid-September. Come February, the town shrinks down to its hotels, and one of them highlights staying open year-round as a distinct rarity.
- Fences and guided tours: Here is what three of our members wrote independently, which beats anything else I could add: without a guided tour, you just look at the alignments from outside the fences. One came away disappointed, noting that you mostly observe the stones from a distance; another realized upon arrival that reservations are mandatory, and recommends booking early as soon as summer hits. Three distinct sites are open to visitors: Ménec, Kermario, and Kerlescan. Staying in the main village makes those booked tours easier to make, since they depart right from there.
- Carnac in the name, a different town on the address: Four properties feature Carnac in their name while actually sitting in a different municipality: two hotels are in Auray, and one hotel and one campground are in Plouharnel. Official classifications link them to those towns too. This is not just a technicality, since Auray sits about fifteen kilometres inland.
