What survived are the monuments, William's château, the Abbaye-aux-Hommes and its tomb, and the église Saint-Pierre with its spire. You pick Caen for them, not for a postcard backdrop.

That is the paradox of Caen. The center was rebuilt after 1944, but everything people come here to see survived. The castle still occupies its spur in the middle of town, the Abbaye-aux-Hommes and the Abbaye-aux-Dames face each other across the center, and the Saint-Pierre church raises its spire at the foot of the ramparts. The hotels listed here sit between 360 and 510 meters from the castle, making a car unnecessary once parked. A member of Avygeo recommends taking the guided tour for both the castle and the abbey, for the same reason each time: without it, you miss the history behind the rooms.
While the castle is no longer entirely intact, I feel it has kept its authenticity with its fortified gates and towers. I recommend the guided tour to better discover the history of the site through the ages.

The station neighborhood has zero tourist charm and makes no effort to fake it, functioning strictly as an office district and redeveloped dock area on the south bank of the canal. It serves a very specific purpose: staying within 400 meters of the train station platforms, which matters when you arrive late or need the first morning train. The 3 classified addresses here are chain hotels, meaning predictable stays with no surprises. The trade-off is distance, requiring a 1.4 to 1.7 kilometer walk to reach the castle, roughly a 15-minute trek along the Orne.

The Mémorial is the city's most visited site, and it sits outside the center, figure on 3.9 kilometres and 7 minutes from the castle. Two rated hotels sit right at its doorstep, at 462 and 886 metres, letting you walk in at opening and spend the half day our members say you need there. The neighborhood itself is residential and lacks charm, people stay here for the museum and easy parking, not for the scenery.
I expected a tribute to the victims of World War II, but this incredibly rich and well-documented museum covers an entire chapter of history from 1939 all the way through the Cold War.

- Caen or Bayeux, the real dilemma: Both cities serve as a base for the D-Day beaches, and the choice comes down to mileage. From the Caen castle, it takes 36.7 kilometres and 36 minutes to reach Arromanches, and 30.2 kilometres to reach Bayeux, which is itself only 11 kilometres from Arromanches. On the other side, Caen offers 1,280 classified rooms compared to 547 in Bayeux, and the Mémorial is 3.9 kilometres from its castle. Sleep in Caen for the city itself, the monuments, and the museum; choose Bayeux to get to the beaches as quickly as possible.
