Menton

Where to stay in Menton: the best neighbourhoods (2026)

In Menton, what you actually came to see sits above the last hotel. We checked the elevations of the 28 rated properties in town: 25 of them sit between 3 and 20 meters on the flat coastal strip. Saint-Michel Church sits at 33 meters, and the White Penitents Chapel climbs to 50.

Nobody actually sleeps in the old town, you walk up into it. The real choice is where that climb starts and what sits right outside your door. The 4 neighborhoods below stretch from west to east along the coast, running from the residential villa district all the way to the Italian border just 2 kilometres away.

Cycling in from Ventimiglia after barely ten miles, I crossed the border and found Menton, the first French town on the coast. What hits you first is its Mediterranean setting, complete with gorgeous seaside bike lanes.

1

The edge of the old town and the market hall At the foot of the stairs

The shortest route up into the narrow streets

This area sits right on the edge of the historic center without actually being in it. The three hotels listed below are under 500 meters from Saint-Michel Church, but 30 meters lower down. The Halles Market is just steps away, and that is where the ramps and stairs leading up to the alleys begin. The downside is the foot traffic. This is the busiest part of town during the day, and rooms facing the street definitely hear it.

Where to stay in this area

Hôtel Royal Westminster Mid-range

A 92-room 3-star hotel on avenue Félix Faure, about twenty meters from the Halles Market. It offers a half-board package, which is a rare find around here.

Check availability

Hôtel Le Balmoral Mid-range

A 69-room 3-star hotel on the same avenue and run by the same operator as the previous one. Keep this in mind if the first is fully booked, since both are handled through the same desk.

Check availability

Best Western Menton Méditerranée Mid-range

An 89-room 3-star hotel on rue de la République, 174 metres from Les Halles. This is the most central address in the guide in the strictest sense of the word, as the market, the sea, and the staircases of the old town are all equidistant.

Check availability

Pros

  • The old town is a 10-minute walk away
  • The Halles Market is under 200 meters away
  • The three largest properties in the guide, meaning better availability

Cons

  • You have to climb stairs to reach the sights
  • The busiest zone in town during the day
  • All three addresses share the same star rating with no luxury options
2

The center and Promenade du Soleil Between rue Partouneaux and the sea

Shops on one side, the beach on the other

Between rue Partouneaux, which serves as the main shopping drag, and the Promenade du Soleil running alongside the beach sits the densest area in town. This is home to Menton's largest hotel, and where you can grab dinner without getting back behind the wheel. The downside is that the promenade is a major road, so rooms facing the water hear the traffic before they hear the waves.

Where to stay in this area

Hôtel L'Orangeraie Mid-range

With 137 rooms, this is the largest rated hotel in Menton on rue Partouneaux. Its size often makes it the last available address when the town fills up, especially in February.

Check availability

Hôtel Chambord Mid-range

A 3-star hotel with 39 rooms on avenue Boyer, 376 metres from Les Halles. The same operator runs an apartment hotel a few streets away, which is handy for a multi-night stay.

Check availability

Hôtel Le Dauphin Mid-range

A 3-star hotel with 29 rooms right on promenade du Soleil, facing the beach. It has a family-run feel, unlike the larger properties nearby.

Check availability

Pros

  • The beach starts right across the street along the promenade
  • The main shopping street and its outdoor terraces are 200 metres away
  • The widest selection in town

Cons

  • The promenade is a busy road
  • No verified budget addresses in this sector
  • The old town takes a 15-minute walk and an uphill climb
3

The west side, from the casino to Carnolès The villa and garden district

High-end stays and small addresses, far from the stairs

Heading toward Roquebrune, the neighborhood shifts character with wide avenues, Belle Époque villas, gardens, and the palais Carnolès at the end. This is where the upscale options cluster, including 3 of the town's 4 four-star hotels and its sole 5-star property, alongside three 2-star hotels so both extremes of the local market share the same sector. The downside is the distance, as you are looking at a walk of 1 to 2 kilometres to reach the old town.

Where to stay in this area

Villa Genesis Luxury

The only 5-star hotel in Menton, on avenue de la Madone, featuring 30 rooms. It earned this rating in late 2024, whereas the town had none before.

Check availability

Best Western Premier Prince de Galles Mid-range

A 4-star hotel with 64 rooms on avenue Général de Gaulle, sitting at the western end of the waterfront. Of all the addresses listed here, this one sits closest to Roquebrune and leaves the town center furthest behind.

Check availability

Hôtel Lemon Budget

A 2-star hotel with 16 rooms located on rue Albert 1er, housed in a former villa surrounded by a garden. The town has only five hotels in this category, and this is one of them.

Check availability

Pros

  • The town's only 4 and 5-star properties
  • A residential area, meaning it stays quiet at night
  • Three 2-star hotels sit right alongside the luxury spots

Cons

  • A walk of 1 to 2 kilometres to reach the old town
  • Limited shopping once you pass the casino
  • The area furthest from the Marché des Halles
4

Garavan and the route d'Italie To the east, toward the border

The marina and the citrus gardens

Past the old town, avenue Porte de France heads toward Italy and serves the port of Garavan, its villas, and its citrus gardens. No other area in the guide matches this level of quiet, and it is the only one where you can walk to the border. It sits 2 kilometres from the old town, and one of the addresses below is only 556 metres away. The downside: shops become scarce the further you go, and the walk back in the evening is a gentle uphill climb.

Where to stay in this area

Hôtel Napoléon Luxury

A 4-star, 44-room hotel on Porte de France featuring a pool and garden, right across from the Garavan harbor. It is the top-tier option on this side of town.

Check availability

Hôtel La Dolce Vita Mid-range

A 3-star, 22-room hotel along the same avenue.

Check availability

ibis budget Menton Budget

A 2-star, 67-room hotel sitting closest to the border among our guide picks, under 800 metres away. It follows a standard chain layout, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Check availability

Pros

  • The quietest of the four areas
  • The Italian border is within walking distance
  • The marina and gardens are right on site

Cons

  • Shops thin out toward the east
  • Allow about 20 minutes on foot to reach the marché des Halles
  • Fontana Rosa garden requires advance reservations for visits

Our tips for booking the right place

  • Vertical meters before horizontal meters: It is Menton's defining quirk, and it completely changes how you read a map. The town climbs in a natural amphitheater: hotels occupy the flat coastal strip between 3 and 20 metres of elevation, while the Saint-Michel basilica sits at 33 metres and the Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs at 50. A hotel listed as 300 metres from the historic center is 300 metres away plus an uphill climb via ramps and stairs. If you are lugging heavy luggage or pushing a stroller, check the elevation changes just as carefully as the distance.
  • February, the fortnight when the town doubles in size: The Lemon Festival runs from February 13 to 28, 2027, and organizers expect over 250,000 visitors for the massive citrus displays set up in the Biovès gardens. In a town of this size, that means booked-out hotels and surging rates during a two-week stretch right in the middle of the low season. Book well in advance if you plan to attend, and double check the dates before locking in your stay if you prefer a quieter trip.
  • The border as a neighbor, not a shortcut: Italy starts 2 kilometres from the old town, and a member of our community mentions riding a bike from Ventimiglia along the coast. You can certainly stay across the border and visit for the day, but keep two things in mind: it is a different country with its own rules for car rentals or insurance, and the Friday market in Ventimiglia packs the trains in both directions. This guide only lists French addresses since we have not personally inspected the ones across the line.
Where not to stay in Menton (honestly)
  • Looking for a hotel in the old town: there are none. All 25 classified hotels in the municipality sit along the coast between 3 and 20 metres of elevation, while the pedestrian alleys start right above them.
  • Hoping for a dorm bed: the town does not offer any. The baseline price for lodging in Menton is a room in a 2-star hotel, and the town only counts five of them.
  • Booking February without checking the calendar: the Lemon Festival takes over for an entire fortnight and books out the entire town.

FAQ: where to stay in Menton

Where to stay in Menton?
Right at the foot of the old town if you are here for the historic center, since that is where the walk up is shortest. Along the promenade du Soleil for the beach and shops. In Garavan for peace and quiet alongside proximity to Italy. And on the west side if you want upscale properties or, conversely, 2-star hotels.
How much does a night cost in Menton?
The Dolce Vita hotel lists 100 EUR a night, and that is the only concrete rate we could find outside of a booking platform, as the other 27 rated properties do not publish theirs since rates shift by date. What we can say comes down to the makeup of the local lodging supply: 17 of the 28 rated properties have 3 stars, making Menton a mid-range destination rather than a luxury getaway.
Where to stay on a budget in Menton?
The town has no youth hostels and only five 2-star hotels. Three are on the west side, one near the border, and one in the center. Your remaining option is the camping du plateau Saint-Michel, the town's only campground, perched 80 metres up above the old town.
Can you stay in the old town of Menton?
No. We checked the elevation of all 28 rated properties: not a single one of its 25 hotels sits above 20 metres, while Saint-Michel church sits at 33 metres and the Pénitents Blancs chapel at 50. The hotels occupy the coastal strip, and the old town begins above that. The closest hotel is under 500 metres away, but sits 30 metres lower.
Should you stay in Menton or Ventimiglia?
Both have merits, and the distance is short: a member of our community cycled in from Ventimiglia covering about 10 kilometres. Staying in Italy often works out cheaper, but it is another country, which complicates car rentals or insurance coverage. This guide only covers French addresses since we have not verified the Italian ones and prefer to be upfront about that.
When does the Lemon Festival take place?
From February 13 to 28, 2027, featuring citrus displays in the Biovès gardens with free access according to the organizers, who expect over 250,000 visitors. This is the two-week stretch when the town fills up the most, and it falls outside the beach season, meaning hotels sell out in February even though things are quiet in November.
