Visiting La Palud-sur-Verdon
Located in the heart of the Gorges du Verdon, La Palud-sur-Verdon is a prime destination for anyone who values wide-open spaces. This mountain village offers a rugged, high-altitude setting that serves as a perfect home base for exploring the region.
An incredible panorama
If you enjoy the outdoors, you will not run out of things to do here. The village acts as a massive playground for both casual sightseers and serious athletes. A major highlight is the Route des Crêtes. This 23-kilometer loop, known locally as the D23, provides dramatic views over the canyons. Built between 1949 and 1972 at an elevation of over 1000 meters, the road allows for a slow-paced drive. You can navigate the loop by car in about 1 hour and 30 minutes, or by bicycle if you are in peak physical shape. Note that sections of the route are closed from November through March.
Hiking and climbing
The hiking options in and around La Palud-sur-Verdon are nearly endless. The sentier Blanc-Martel, or GR34, is the most famous route. This 15-kilometer trek follows trails carved directly into the rock face, winding down to the canyon floor. Keep an eye out for the local wildlife and flora, including endemic ferns, golden eagles, wild boars, roe deer, and occasionally chamois. The massif du Montdenier, which partially hosts the village, offers additional high-altitude trail networks. For climbers, people travel from around the world to scale the falaise de l'Escalès, a legendary spot for big-wall climbing.
Well-preserved heritage
Beyond the trails, the village itself retains a classic mountain character. In the center, you can visit a 13th-century castle that now houses the Écomusée des Gorges du Verdon. The museum focuses on the unique biodiversity of one of Europe's largest canyons, detailing the plant and animal life specific to the area. You will also find a church known for its stained glass, which is attached to an 11th-century Romanesque bell tower. If you have extra time, consider quick trips to neighboring villages like Rougon, Châteauneuf-lès-Moustiers, or Moustiers-Sainte-Marie.
When to go
La Palud-sur-Verdon is most popular during the summer months when hikers and swimmers take advantage of the sun to explore the Gorges du Verdon. However, autumn is an excellent alternative. The foliage turns to warm, rich colors, and the cooler temperatures are far better suited for long-distance hiking.
