The Notre-Dame cathedral dwarfs everything around it, and it is the main reason to visit with 25 French kings crowned right here. Ariane, a member of our community, describes a very quiet and well-maintained city featuring lovely green spaces and solid restaurants with sidewalk seating. Around the forecourt, the city is compact enough to explore on foot in just a few streets, stretching from the Porte de Mars to place Royale. The catch is significant: the Palais du Tau right next door and the Fine Arts Museum are both closed for renovations.
I came for the film scene, but I really enjoyed this very quiet and well-maintained city with its lovely green spaces. The striking cathedral remains the primary draw, while the main street also offers solid restaurants where you can easily sit outside.

A former barracks turned 5-star hotel on rue Tronsson-Ducoudray, sitting 90 metres from the forecourt. No other hotel is quite this close to the landmark.

Place Drouet-d'Erlon is a long esplanade lined with outdoor terraces and storefronts, situated 400 metres from the cathedral forecourt, and hotels cluster here in greater numbers than anywhere else in the city. The train station sits 400 metres further on, connecting you to Paris in under an hour. Our member MathildeFlor notes that she was not won over by this square, despite its popularity with locals: it is the lively hub of town, though far from the prettiest. The downside is that quiet nights are hard to come by here.

The city's international youth hostel, located west of downtown, and the only shared accommodation in town. This is where you will find the lowest nightly rates in Reims.

Located 2 kilometres southeast of the cathedral forecourt, the Saint-Nicaise hill lines up champagne houses above 250 kilometres of chalk tunnels: Pommery, Ruinart, Veuve Clicquot, Piper-Heidsieck. Ariane, a member of our community, booked a guided tour and tasting at Pommery and mentions a very well-kept park and Elizabethan architecture. The Saint-Remi Basilica closes off the neighborhood to the south. The downside is that the tourist office lists just one hotel in the entire district, and its rates are the highest in the guide.
Wandering through the underground cellars, which are deeply impressive and enhanced by unique art installations, I learned a lot about how champagne is made and aged.

Located 3 kilometres from the cathedral square along the main routes leading to the highway, Reims features a line of chain hotels around the exhibition center and the Croix-Blandin business park. These properties are still within city limits, unlike the ones in Tinqueux or Bezannes. You get free parking and available rooms when the rest of town is fully booked. The trade-off: the surroundings consist entirely of industrial parks, and every trip to the cathedral requires the tram or a car.

Our tips for booking the right place
- Two closed museums and what is still open: Two of the three major downtown museums are undergoing renovations, a detail flagged first by our community member MathildeFlor. The Palais du Tau, home to the coronation treasury right next to the cathedral, has been closed to the public since January 2023 and will reopen in 2027, though its gift shop remains open and guided tours of the cathedral towers continue on weekends through mid-November starting at 9 EUR. The Museum of Fine Arts is also closed, and the reopening date posted by the tourist office has already passed, so check ahead before you arrive as our member advises. Still open for visits are the Musée-Hôtel Le Vergeur, the Museum of the Surrender, and the Saint-Remi Museum. The champagne cellars are unaffected.
- Book your cellar tour before your hotel: Cellar tours do not happen on a whim, as they require advance booking and charge admission. Our community member Ariane booked a guided tour with a tasting at Pommery and still talks about it. This logistical detail shifts how you choose your neighborhood, because if your tour slots are booked on the Butte Saint-Nicaise, staying downtown leaves you with 2 kilometres to cover, and a champagne tasting rarely leaves you eager to drive. Lock in your appointments first, then pick your neighborhood.
- The tram over the car: Reims has 196,565 residents and two tram lines crossing the city from north to southeast, passing the train station and downtown. This is what makes the hotels near the exhibition center manageable without a car and connects the Butte Saint-Nicaise to the cathedral forecourt. Two of our members note, however, that the city lacks evening energy, particularly off-season, so do not expect an outlying neighborhood to offer a sit-down meal at 10 PM.
- Booking a hotel with "Reims" in the name without checking the actual municipality. The greet in Tinqueux, the ibis budget in Thillois, and the Akena in Bezannes all go by "Reims" something, yet none of them are in the city limits. They sit right by the highway exits, 4 kilometres or more from the cathedral forecourt. The exhibition center and Croix-Blandin are actually inside Reims despite the distance, which catches many visitors off guard.
- Showing up for the coronation treasury without checking ahead. The Palais du Tau stays closed until 2027, even though the building right next to the cathedral looks completely open when you walk up to the square.
