Things to do in Hallstatt: must-see attractions

Visiting Hallstatt in the Austrian Alps

Tucked into the Austrian Alps, Hallstatt is a village defined by narrow streets and steep mountain slopes. It sits on the edge of the Hallstättersee, a lake that mirrors the surrounding peaks. This village draws travelers for its preserved architecture and deep history.

1. A village on the water

Hallstatt is built along the banks of the Hallstättersee, with traditional houses clinging to the mountainside. The layout feels compact, with cobblestone alleys leading to squares and balconies lined with flowers. For a different perspective, walk along the promenade du lac or take a boat onto the water. It is a quiet way to see the village architecture from a distance, much like renting a small skiff on a calm lake in the Adirondacks.

2. Ancient history

Hallstatt is an archaeological landmark that gave its name to the culture de Hallstatt, a period marking the early Iron Age. To see artifacts from this era, visit the Musée de Hallstatt. The collection includes tools, jewelry, and burial items dating back 7,000 years. The town is also known for its salt mines, which are among the oldest in the world.

3. The salt mines

The salt mines, or Salzwelten, are a primary attraction. Take the funicular up to the Salzberg mountain for a view of the village and the lake below. Inside the mine, tours cover the history of salt extraction and the local economy. The tour includes sliding down the wooden miner slides, a feature that remains a staple of the experience.

4. Outdoor activities

The surrounding mountains provide hiking trails for various skill levels. A popular route leads to the Dachstein Skywalk, a suspension bridge with views across the Alps. During summer, the lake is used for swimming and kayaking. In winter, travelers head to the nearby ski slopes.

When to go

May through September offers mild weather for hiking and boating. Winter brings snow and regional markets, which attracts those interested in skiing or seasonal atmosphere.

How to get there

Most travelers fly into Vienna or Salzbourg. From Salzbourg, you can take a train to Hallstatt with a transfer at Attnang-Puchheim. The final leg of the journey typically involves a short ferry crossing across the lake to reach the village center.

A town made for Instagram

Super photogenic place, the small streets of the old town, the pretty houses, and especially the many viewpoints of the village, the lake, and the mountains! It even seems like this village is considered the most Instagrammable in the world in Asia...

An exceptional natural setting

Between the lake and the mountains, this UNESCO-listed village has a magnificent setting. The little alleys of the village are as picturesque as can be, full of charm, but you can get around them pretty quickly. On the other hand, walking around the region, or going on hikes or bike rides, you can easily spend several days here without getting tired of these landscapes where the views can change at every turn.
