Where to stay in the Gili Islands: the 3 areas to know in 2026

On the Gili Islands, the island you pick shapes your whole stay, and the three are nothing alike. Gili Trawangan has the bars, the night market and the dive centres. Gili Air keeps a lively village and calm beaches. Gili Meno, the smallest, offers silence and turtles swimming close to shore. All three are ten minutes apart by boat.

Basic bungalows go for roughly $29*. A hotel with a pool is more like $90*, and villas with a private pool go over $290* in high season. Wherever you stay, carry cash: cards aren't accepted everywhere.

One base or several?

The islands are ten minutes apart by boat: one is enough, two if you want a taste of both calm and buzz.

  • Three nights: A single island, Gili Air: the beach, the turtles and a day trip by boat to Meno and Trawangan.
  • Five nights: Two islands: three nights on Gili Meno for the silence, then two on Trawangan for the night market.
  • One week: All three islands: two nights on each, ending on Gili Trawangan, where most boats to Bali leave from.

How much driving between two bases?

Times by boat between the islands and from Bali, by car on Lombok.

1

Gili Trawangan The harbour and main street, the east coast, the quiet north and the sunset west coast

for nightlife, diving and the night market

Gili Trawangan

Gili Trawangan on Avygeo: +8 recs Full guide

The largest and liveliest. Along the east coast of Gili Trawangan, bars, dive centres and restaurants follow one another facing Lombok, and the night market sets up every evening near the harbour. In the north and west the beaches empty and the sun sets over Bali. The downside: music late into the night near the centre.

On this island off Lombok, you can come to party, lounge on the white sand beaches (and definitely don't forget the sunscreen), or go scuba diving.

Pros

  • A choice of restaurants and bars
  • The dive centres

Cons

  • Music late near the centre
  • The busiest of the three
2

Gili Air The harbour in the south, the village, the east coast and the quieter north coast

for a balance of calm and village life

The closest to Lombok, and the most lived-in. On Gili Air, the village keeps its mosque and its people, the east coast lines up cafés and snorkelling centres, and the north stays peaceful. You'll find plenty of variety for meals without the party noise. The downside: some beaches have a coral bottom, awkward for swimming.

For families or couples, I would recommend a stay on Gili Air instead, which is my favorite.

3

Gili Meno The east coast facing Gili Air, the west coast and the Nest, the salt lake in the middle

for silence, turtles and honeymoons

The smallest and quietest. On Gili Meno there are a few hundred inhabitants, beaches that are often deserted and turtles swimming close in on the east coast. To the west, the Nest statues rest underwater. In the evening you hear only the sea. The downside: very few restaurants, and nothing to do after dinner.

Our tips for booking the right place

  • Choose your side of the island: On Trawangan, the centre near the harbour is noisy at night; the north and west are quiet. On Gili Air, the north is more peaceful than the harbour coast.
  • Ask about luggage transport: There are no taxis or cars. Ask your hotel whether it sends a cart or a porter to the boat, especially if you're staying far from the harbour.
  • Keep a spare night: Fast boats are sometimes cancelled in rough seas. Don't schedule your return to Bali on the same day as an international flight.
Where not to stay in the Gili Islands
  • Sleeping near the bars in the centre of Trawangan if you want sleep: the music plays late.
  • Arriving in July or August without a booking: the best-rated places are full.
  • Booking the last boat to Bali on the day of your flight: one cancellation is enough to miss it.
