Where to stay in Yichang: the 4 neighborhoods to know in 2026

In Yichang, what settles the neighborhood is the hour of departure. The city is the gateway to the Three Gorges and makes no secret of it: the dam, one hundred and eighty-five meters of concrete and two thousand three hundred meters long, stands forty kilometers upstream at Sandouping; the cruise ships board higher still, at Taipingxi, beyond the lock; the high-speed station is to the east, eight kilometers from downtown, and the airport twenty-six. In between lies a city of riverbanks and bridges: the center and its business district around People's Square, the Binjiang promenade that follows the Yangtze for twenty kilometers, the downstream bank of Wujiagang where the big riverside hotels have settled, and to the northwest the Gezhouba lock, the first dam ever built on the river, which you watch open from the quay. What you choose when you book is not a neighborhood to visit, it is a distance to tomorrow morning's departure point.

Prices are those of a provincial Chinese city, and the hotels are few: only nine addresses had an open listing and a legible score on the day this guide was written, most of them under sixty reviews, so the scores below come with their number of voices. A budget room sits at $17 to $29*; mid-range starts at $34* and climbs to $57*; the four and five stars on the riverbank start at $62* and top out at $102*, breakfast included. Four neighborhoods follow, and the split tells the truth: three addresses downtown, two on the bank, one single one at the station, three toward the dam.

Downtown: the business district, People's Square and the Binjiang promenade People's Square and the business district, the shopping streets of Yunji Lu and Jiefang Lu, the Binjiang promenade along the Yangtze, the Yichang museum and the grand theater, the Yiling bridge and its view of the river, Dongshan lake park, the old Yichang station to the northwest

for walking by the river, the restaurants, the dam shuttle, a single night

Downtown Yichang sits between People's Square, which serves as the whole city's landmark, and the river three hundred meters below. In between, the shopping streets of Yunji Lu and Jiefang Lu, restaurants serving Yangtze fish and the hole-in-the-wall stalls of chili-oil noodles where the city eats breakfast before seven. By the water, the Binjiang promenade runs for twenty kilometers, wide and planted, with its evening dancers, its card players and the view of freighters climbing toward the lock; the suspended Yiling bridge closes it to the north. The Yichang museum, opened in 2019, tells the river before the dams and shows the objects lifted out of the drowned valleys, and it is the only serious visit you can make without leaving town. You stay here to walk in the evening, to dine on foot, and because the shuttles for the dam and the gorges leave from here. The downside: nothing monumental to see, and a city that closes early.

The downstream bank: Wujiagang, the Wanda and the river's edge Yanjiang Avenue downstream, the Wanda shopping mall, the Wujiagang business district, the river promenade and its pontoons, Moji mountain park, China Three Gorges University

for a room on the Yangtze, a pool, a shopping mall, families

Three kilometers downstream of the center, the Wujiagang bank is the new part of the city: residential towers lined up facing the river, the Wanda mall with its cinema and its brands, offices, and above all the continuation of the promenade, wider and quieter than downtown, with pontoons from which you watch the container ships go by. This is where the international chains built, because there was room and a view: three of the best rated hotels in Yichang stand along two kilometers of quay, with pools and breakfasts at the water's edge. Behind them, Moji mountain and its park give an hour's walk and a lookout over the river bends. You stay here for a river-facing room at Chinese prices, for a pool and for a mall within pushchair range. The downside: ten minutes by taxi to dine downtown, and a neighborhood with no street.

The east: Yichang Dong station and the airport road The Yichang Dong high-speed station, the office towers and malls of Dongshan Avenue, the development zone, the Three Gorges airport twenty-six kilometers out

for a train before seven, an early flight, a transit night and nothing else

Yichang Dong station, opened in 2012, is why most travelers pass through this city at all: Wuhan is two hours away by train, Chongqing five, Shanghai seven, and the night trains for Beijing leave from here. Around it, a district of offices and shopping malls built in fifteen years along Dongshan Avenue, useful and charmless, where the hotels can be counted on one hand and aim at the business traveler. Twenty-six kilometers east, the Three Gorges airport connects Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou in two to three hours. You sleep here for one reason only: a train or a plane before seven in the morning, when a taxi from downtown would cost half an hour of sleep. The downside: everything else. Eight kilometers from the river, nothing to see, and a single rated address in the neighborhood.

Gezhouba, Yiling and the road to the dam The Gezhouba lock and its viewpoint, the Gezhouba district and its engineers' town, the Sanxia Culture Tiandi, the Sandouping road and the Three Gorges dam forty kilometers out, the Three Visitors Cave, the Taipingxi cruise port, Yiling district

for the dam on waking, the cruise ship, the lock, the engineers

Northwest of the city the river is barred twice. First right here, by Gezhouba, the first dam ever built on the Yangtze, completed in 1988, whose locks you watch swallow a convoy of barges from the quay: a free spectacle that lasts an hour and that nobody comes to see. Around it, the Gezhouba district has kept the look of the engineers' town it was, wide avenues and brick blocks, with a quarter of restaurants and bars, the Sanxia Culture Tiandi. Ten kilometers upstream, the Three Visitors Cave opens above a gorge, where three poets of the Tang and the Song came to write. Then the road follows the river to Sandouping and the Three Gorges dam, forty kilometers, and on to the port of Taipingxi, where the cruises board. You stay here to leave for the dam at opening time, or to catch a boat the next day. The downside: twenty minutes from downtown, and hotels rated on nine reviews.

Our tips for booking the right place

  • The dam: shuttle compulsory, passport required, and free: You do not drive your own car to the Three Gorges dam: vehicles stop at the Sandouping visitor center, forty kilometers upstream, and shuttles then climb to the three viewpoints, among them Tanziling hill, which gives you the whole structure head-on, and platform 185, level with the crest. Entry has been free since 2014, the shuttle costs a few yuan, and a passport is compulsory at the checkpoint: without it, you do not get in. Public buses leave downtown Yichang in an hour and a quarter, organized tours in an hour. Allow three hours on site, preferably in the morning: in the afternoon, the river mist often erases the perspective.
  • The cruises board beyond the lock, not in town: The boats that climb the Three Gorges toward Chongqing no longer board at Yichang now that the dam cuts the river: the cruise ships take their passengers at Taipingxi, upstream of the lock, fifty kilometers from the city, and the companies charter coaches that leave downtown two to three hours before boarding. Downstream sailings also disembark at Taipingxi, then drop passengers in town. There are fast boats for the Xiling gorge and the village of Three Gorges Tribe, on a day trip, and those do leave from the city quay. Check your boarding port BEFORE choosing your hotel: the difference is an hour on the road at first light.
  • Two hours from Wuhan, five from Chongqing: the city is a stage: Yichang is crossed more than it is visited, and the network says so: Yichang Dong station is two hours from Wuhan, five from Chongqing, seven from Shanghai, and the airport serves Beijing and Guangzhou. In town, a taxi costs $1.20 to $3.40* a trip, buses $0.34* with a card or a phone, and there is no metro. Ride-hailing apps work provided you have a Chinese number; without one, you take a taxi at a rank or have the front desk call one. Payment is by phone everywhere: bring cash or a foreign card linked to an app before you arrive, as many small businesses no longer take notes.
  • River fish, red tea and noodles before seven: Yichang's table is that of the Yangtze and of Hubei: river fish steamed or in a sour and spicy soup, chili-oil noodles that the city swallows standing up before seven in the morning, fermented tofu, and the oranges of Zigui, picked upstream, sold by the box on the pavements in November. The region also produces one of the great red teas of China, yihong, served everywhere for nothing. Reckon $3.40 to $9.10* for a full meal in a downtown canteen, double that in a fish restaurant with a view. The local spirit is baijiu, and the riverside restaurants close around half past nine.
Where not to stay in Yichang
  • The two addresses in this city rated 6.0 on a single review: the Three Gorges project hotel, at Bahekou, and the 7Days by the east station. A score computed on one voice says nothing, and both present themselves as transit hotels without quite being one.
  • A hotel in Zigui or Huanglingmiao booked in the belief that you are sleeping near the dam: those towns are upstream of the lock, forty kilometers from Yichang, and you wake up far from the city without being any closer to the Sandouping visitor center.
  • The airport for visiting the city: twenty-six kilometers, half an hour by taxi, and a zone with nothing around it. It is justified only for a flight before seven.

FAQ: where to stay in Yichang

Which neighborhood should you stay in for a first time in Yichang?
Downtown, between People's Square and the Binjiang promenade, if you want to dine and walk by the river in the evening and take the dam shuttle in the morning; on the downstream bank, at Wujiagang, if you want a room facing the Yangtze and a pool for the price of a European mid-range. The east station serves early departures only, Gezhouba only to gain twenty kilometers on the dam road.
Where can you stay cheaply in Yichang?
In a Chinese chain in the business district or at Gezhouba, $17 to $29* a room, clean and small, with no published score for want of reviews in number; or in a mid-range by the east station, $34 to $57*, whose cleanliness is rated 9.2. At that level of price the city is one of the cheapest in this guide, and the gap between $29 and $57* shows far more here than elsewhere.
How many nights should you plan in Yichang?
One, and two if you are taking a boat. The first day covers the dam, three hours on site and two on the road, with the river promenade on the way back; the second fills up with the Gezhouba lock, the Three Visitors Cave and the museum, or serves as margin before boarding at Taipingxi. The city does not call for a stay: it calls for a well-placed stage.
Is Yichang safe for a traveler?
Yes, entirely, by day and by night, in the four neighborhoods of this guide: visible crime is close to nil and the hotel reviews never mention it. The two difficulties lie elsewhere: almost nobody speaks English outside the international hotels, and payment by phone has replaced cash in many businesses. A translation app and a payment solution prepared before departure change the stay.
How do you get downtown from the station or the airport?
From Yichang Dong station, eight kilometers: taxi in twenty minutes for $2.30 to $4.60*, or a city bus for $0.34*. From the Three Gorges airport, twenty-six kilometers: an airport shuttle to downtown for $3.40*, an hour, or a taxi in thirty-five minutes for $9.10 to $14*. The riverside hotels send a car if you ask the day before.
What does a night in Yichang cost?
$17 to $29* for a budget chain room, $34 to $57* for a decent mid-range, $62 to $102* for the four and five stars on the riverbank, breakfast included. Prices rise during the national holidays of early October and Chinese New Year, when the whole of China visits the dam, and fall from December to March, the season of mists.
