Visiting La Paloma: The Atlantic at a Human Scale

Located in the Rocha department, in southeastern Uruguay, La Paloma is a small beach town that attracts both local Uruguayan families and international travelers looking for nature and quiet stretches of sand. It is less intense than Punta del Este, maintaining a low-key character that sits somewhere between a summer resort and a coastal village.

Beaches for every pace

The coastline around La Paloma shifts between wide, open beaches and more sheltered coves. Playa Bahía Chica is a favorite for families thanks to its calm water, while Playa La Balconada draws a younger crowd and is a prime spot for sunset watching. For surfing, Playa Los Botes and La Aguada provide solid conditions depending on the swell. The lighthouse, the town’s most recognizable landmark, serves as a great navigation point and a popular lookout.

A town with local roots

The center of La Paloma is modest, consisting of a few retail streets, a seasonal craft market, and mid-sized grocery stores. You will not find luxury boutiques or a high-end scene here. Life follows the rhythm of the tides, the wind, and the sun. The atmosphere is family-oriented, with a few lively bars, but outside of January, nighttime activity is minimal.

Easy access to nature reserves

La Paloma serves as a base for several nature outings. A few miles away, the lagune de Rocha is a draw for birdwatchers. Heading north, the Parc National de Cabo Polonio is accessible by bus followed by a 4x4 truck ride, making for an easy day trip into a place that feels disconnected from the modern world. These surroundings highlight the ecological appeal of the region.

Slow living and quiet contemplation

Beyond swimming, La Paloma is well-suited for walking, cycling, or reading on the sand. You can fish from the pier or off a boat, take a surf lesson, or simply enjoy the salty air. Outside of the peak summer season, the town returns to a state of near-total quiet, which is appreciated by retirees and long-term travelers.

Fish, sweets, and local flavors

Dining menus often feature grilled fish or milanesa de pescado (breaded fish fillets), shrimp or mullet empanadas, and simple savory tarts. For dessert, flan with dulce de leche and house-made ice cream are staples. As for drinks, local craft beers are becoming more common, typically served on terraces with ocean views.

Where to eat?

  • Lo de Edinson (center): Fish specialties, friendly service, moderate prices.
  • La Ballena (La Balconada): Sea views, a simple menu, and solid seafood dishes.
  • Las Rocas Resto (Los Botes): More refined cooking, pleasant decor, and a good wine list.

Where to stay?

  • UY Proa Sur Hotel (center): A modern hotel with a pool, well-positioned for walking around town.
  • Las Eduardas Apart Hotel (Playa Anaconda): Apartment-style units with direct beach access and welcoming staff.
  • Hotel Palma de Mallorca (center): A budget-friendly option with simple, clean rooms and a convenient location.

When to go?

The high season runs from December to February, with the busiest crowds arriving around New Year's. For more peace and quiet, the months of November or March allow you to enjoy the beaches without the masses, while still offering pleasant temperatures.

How to get there?

From Montevideo, direct buses (COT, Rutas del Sol) reach La Paloma in 4 to 5 hours (about 500, 625 UYU, or approximately $12, $15). The roads are in good condition, though you may need to transfer in Rocha depending on the schedule. By car, the drive takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes via the Ruta Interbalnearia.

How to get around?

The town is compact enough to explore entirely on foot. For reaching more distant beaches or lagoons, a bicycle is a great choice. During the high season, a few taxis are available in the evenings.

Nice and quiet off-season

It is a beach resort in the summer, but by April there is barely anyone around (except during tourism week). You can take a walk to the lighthouse and along the big beaches covered in blue and purple mussel shells. Or you can take a stroll down to the port on the wooden boardwalks that are set up for wheelchair access. There is a small museum about the old railway line that used to connect La Paloma to Montevideo.
