Where to stay in the San Juan Islands: the 3 areas to know in 2026
In the San Juan Islands, every island has its own mood, and the ferry decides the rest. San Juan has the port of Friday Harbor, the restaurants and the orcas of the west coast. Orcas, wilder, hides its villages at the foot of Mount Constitution. Lopez, flat and peaceful, is lived by bike, between farms and coves.
Rooms are scarce, and summer makes them expensive: budget from $169* out of season for a simple inn, often $340* in July for a room facing the harbour, while the suites set right on the water go beyond $510*. Three islands follow, less than an hour's boat ride from one another.

One base or several?
Each island has its own ferry schedule: changing base costs half a day. For a weekend, stay on a single island.
- A long weekend: A single base, in Friday Harbor: the harbour, the west coast and the orcas, and Roche Harbor at sunset.
- Four or five days: Two bases: two nights on San Juan, then two or three on Orcas for Mount Constitution.
- One week: Three bases: San Juan, Orcas, then two nights on Lopez, by bike, before catching the ferry back.
How much driving between two bases?
Times given by ferry from Anacortes and between the islands, by car on the islands. Schedules change with the seasons: check them before you book.

San Juan Island and Friday Harbor Friday Harbor, Roche Harbor, Mitchell Bay and the west coast down to Lime Kiln Point
for a first stay, the harbour and the orcas
The liveliest of the islands. Friday Harbor greets the ferry at the foot of its main street, with its restaurants, galleries and the Whale Museum. Twenty minutes away, Roche Harbor keeps its marina and its old 1886 hotel; the west coast, from Mitchell Bay to Lime Kiln Point, belongs to the orcas. The downside: this is where the summer crowds land.

Island Inn at 123 West Mid-range
Modern rooms and apartments five minutes' walk from the ferry landing, in the heart of the harbour.
Snug Harbor Resort and Marina Mid-range
Waterfront cabins at Mitchell Bay, on the west coast, with kayaks lent out to go and see the seals.
Pros
- The ferry, restaurants and harbour on foot
- The west-coast orcas twenty minutes away
Cons
- Ferry crowds in high summer
- The highest prices in the archipelago
Orcas Island Eastsound, Orcas Village, Deer Harbor, Olga and Moran State Park around Mount Constitution
for the forest, hiking and Mount Constitution
The largest and the wildest. The island draws a horseshoe around an arm of the sea: Eastsound, at the head of it, has its cafés and artists' studios; Deer Harbor and Olga open onto quiet bays. Moran State Park climbs to Mount Constitution through a forest of lakes. The downside: distances are long, and a car is almost a must.

A 1904 Victorian house just above the ferry landing at Orcas Village, with a porch over the harbour and a restaurant.
Outlook Inn on Orcas Island Mid-range
Facing the water in the centre of Eastsound, a few steps from the village cafés and galleries.
Pros
- The finest hiking in the archipelago
- Artists' villages by the water
Cons
- A car for almost everything
- Few hotels, quickly full in summer
Lopez Island Lopez Village, Fisherman Bay, Shark Reef and the small neighbouring islands of Decatur and Blakely
for cycling, farms and peace and quiet
The gentlest of the three. Lopez is flat, covered in meadows and farms, and its roads are easy to ride by bike. The little village of Lopez sits on the edge of Fisherman Bay; to the southwest, Shark Reef park looks out onto rocks where the seals sleep. The downside: very few places to stay, and next to nothing to do in the evening.

Pros
- Flat roads, perfect for cycling
- The deepest calm in the archipelago
Cons
- Very few places to stay
- Almost nothing open in the evening
Our tips for booking the right place
- Book the ferry before the room: In summer, vehicle spaces go weeks ahead. First check there is still a boat to your island on the day you want, then book your accommodation. On foot, you can always board.
- Spend the night before in Anacortes: If your flight lands late in Seattle, spend the first night in Anacortes, on the mainland, near the terminal. You will catch the first ferry of the morning, the least crowded, and rooms there cost less than on the islands.
- Pick a room with a kitchen: Restaurants are few and close early, especially on Orcas and Lopez. A cabin or an apartment with a kitchen lets you dine facing the water with produce from the farms.
- Changing island every night: each crossing takes half a day with the wait.
- Booking on Lopez if you want restaurants and evening life: the island goes to bed early.
- Coming in summer without a car reservation for the ferry: the lines are counted in hours.
