Top 5 best museums in Normandy2026 ranking

I lived in Rouen for 3 years, and I really appreciated the cultural and historical richness of the Normandy region. Visiting the Museum of Fine Arts was a must for me, given the impressionist heritage in the area! I found the museum building absolutely sublime during my visit, and the collections are very beautiful. That said, I was a little disappointed to see almost no impressionist paintings during my visit (Monet, Manet, Renoir...). It would have been almost logical, given how many artists from this movement came from the region.

I had the chance to see the Bayeux Tapestry in person. It tells the epic story of William the Conqueror, which, for a history fan like me, is just incredible. Like many, I am very worried about it being moved across the English Channel because I know how fragile it is. Let's hope we can find it in the same condition.

I found the visit to this museum really very interesting. If you are passionate about ceramics and you work with them today, then you should really enjoy this as well. Just a heads up, double check that the museum is open, as I believe there is some construction planned.

I really enjoyed visiting this museum, which I first discovered just to get out of the rain. After visiting Giverny, it was great to find many paintings by Monet, but also Renoir. A whole section is dedicated to Impressionism. There are also many other works from all different eras.

This, or rather these "Volcanoes," are an impressive and imposing concrete structure designed by Oscar Niemeyer. As the Scène Nationale of Le Havre, the programming at the Grand Volcan is both significant and varied. They even organize fun tours for children, without their parents. The Petit Volcan has recently become the municipal library. A site dedicated to the arts and culture, but also to architecture through these buildings.

The André Malraux Museum of Modern Art (MuMa) is the fine arts museum in Le Havre. Thanks to its architecture without load-bearing walls and its large bay windows, the natural light really highlights the many Impressionist works, most of which were acquired through bequests. There are varied temporary exhibitions in addition to the permanent collections. Good to know, admission is free on the first Saturday of every month.

I made a stop in Bayeux just to admire this iconic tapestry. Even though the work itself, which is gigantic, refined, and full of details, really fascinated me, I did not enjoy the flow of the visit. Because you cannot book a specific time slot, the line isn't smooth and my audio guide started before I could even catch a glimpse of the tapestry. Plus, the slightly worn-out setting of the museum doesn't really show off its masterpiece to its best advantage. The ongoing renovation might be able to fix that.

Dedicated to the history of Impressionism, this quiet museum does not feature any major works. It is really better to visit Orsay if you want to admire the masterpieces of this movement. However, this well-organized museum, which presents a small permanent collection as well as interesting temporary exhibitions, helped me discover new artists like Andrea Branzi. The visit is pretty quick to get through.

Everyone has heard of this famous tapestry. It is a must-see if you come to Bayeux. The tapestry is very impressive and perfectly preserved. I did not expect it to be so long. It also features a lot of detail. If you have the chance, book a guided tour to learn more.

While Claude Monet's gardens were packed during my visit, the museum was almost empty. That is a shame because I found it really very interesting. It perfectly complements the visit to the gardens. It will allow you to discover other Impressionist painters and learn more about this movement. I highly recommend that you visit it.
