What to know about Cala Sant Francesc, the golden cove of Blanes

Located away from the center of Blanes, Cala Sant Francesc is a well-kept secret, a sandy cove bathed in calm, clear water. Surrounded by lush greenery and protective cliffs, it offers a more intimate and preserved atmosphere than the larger, busier urban beaches nearby.

Why is this cove so popular?

Affectionately nicknamed Cala Bona (the good cove) by locals, the name speaks for itself. Protected from prevailing winds, it forms a natural pool where the water is often warmer and consistently clear. It is an ideal refuge for families and those looking for the raw beauty of the Costa Brava without the crowds.

Its modest size, about 200 meters long, and its thick golden sand make it a comfortable place to spend the day. The quality of the water and the facilities regularly earn it recognition, a testament to its well-maintained environment.

A cove that appeals to the senses

The arrival at the cove is a promise in itself. The scent of the pine trees lining the path mingles with the salty air. Once on the beach, the sand, with grains coarse enough that it does not blow around in the wind, warms up pleasantly under your feet. The dominant sound is not the city, but the gentle lapping of waves on the shore.

Below the surface, the water's transparency invites exploration. With a simple mask, you can discover rocky seabeds on the sides of the cove where colorful marine life hides. It is a spectacle accessible to everyone, just a few strokes from the shore.

Between relaxing and exploring

Complete services for a stress-free day

Although the setting is natural, the cove is fully equipped to ensure comfort without altering the site. A well-regarded restaurant overlooks the beach, offering a view for a lunch facing the sea.

Services and facilities at Cala Sant Francesc:

  • Rental of lounge chairs and umbrellas.
  • Lifeguard station providing surveillance during the season.
  • Showers and restrooms available.
  • Pedal boat rentals for venturing further out on the water.

Beyond the sand: an exceptional setting

Cala Sant Francesc is the starting or ending point for beautiful walks. It is overlooked by the hermitage that gave it its name and is just a few steps from one of the treasures of Blanes: the Jardin Botanique Marimurtra. A visit to the garden can be perfectly concluded with a walk down to the cove for a refreshing swim.

Local tip: In high season, the paid parking lot can fill up quickly. For a memorable and stress-free arrival, opt for the shuttle boats departing from the port of Blanes. The trip offers great views of the coast and drops you off directly on the beach.

Not so wild after all, but a pretty setting

A much more charming cove for my taste than S'abanell beach. A bit more out of the way, but the (short) trip is worth it.
Look, don't go imagining you're arriving in some untouched, wild land with the cove all to yourself.
I saw quite a few little fish by the water's edge, and if the people I see swimming with masks near the rocks are anything to go by, I imagine there are some pretty things to see :)
