Visiting the Sainte Anne Marine National Park

Just 5 km off the coast of Mahé, the Sainte Anne Marine National Park stands out as a flagship nature reserve in the Seychelles. Established back in 1973, it holds the distinction of being the first marine park in the Indian Ocean, encompassing six islands and a sprawling protected marine zone. This sanctuary gives visitors an up-close look at a well-preserved ecosystem blending white sand beaches, coral reefs, and tropical forests.

An Archipelago of Many Faces

The park comprises the islands of Sainte-Anne, Cerf, Longue, Moyenne, Ronde, and Île Cachée. Each one has its own distinct character:

  • Sainte-Anne: The largest of the group, home to the park's only resort complex.
  • Cerf: Known for quiet beaches and hiking trails.
  • Longue: Formerly used as a quarantine station, now entirely uninhabited.
  • Moyenne: Made famous by Brendon Grimshaw, a British man who lived there as a hermit and dedicated his life to conservation.
  • Ronde: Offers standout panoramic views of the surrounding islands.
  • Île Cachée: A genuine haven for seabirds.

Access to the park is exclusively by boat, which helps protect the delicate environment.

Water Sports and Underwater Exploration

The park serves as a prime spot for snorkeling and scuba diving. Crystal clear waters harbor vibrant coral reefs populated by schools of tropical fish. Glass bottom boat tours let you observe marine life without getting wet. You can also rent kayaks or paddleboards to tour the islands and take in the coastline from a unique angle.

Exceptional Flora and Fauna

This park functions as a true biodiversity sanctuary. It features some of the most extensive seagrass beds in the Seychelles, providing a safe haven for numerous species. Marine residents include blacktip reef sharks, stingrays, parrotfish, and green turtles that pull themselves onto the beaches to nest. The islands also support seabirds, fruit bats, and a rich endemic plant life, including the famous coco de mer.

Where to Stay

Sainte-Anne Island has a tiny residential population of around 40 people. The primary lodging option is the Club Med Seychelles, which, despite its secluded setting, comes fully equipped with all the amenities needed for a luxury getaway. This eco-chic resort features spacious villas, diverse dining venues, and plenty of activities. Its environmental commitment shows through initiatives like eliminating single-use plastics and actively protecting the local coral reefs.

What to See Nearby

From the park, you can easily head back over to Mahé to explore the capital of Victoria, browse the local market, or hike through Morne Seychellois National Park. Neighboring islands like Praslin and La Digue make straightforward day trips. These spots deliver idyllic beaches, nature reserves, and a deep dive into Seychellois Creole culture.

Practical Tips for Visitors

Before heading out to the park, check the weather forecast and tide schedules. Bring along biodegradable sunscreen, a hat, plenty of drinking water, and sturdy walking shoes. Visitors must follow park regulations to protect this fragile ecosystem: do not touch the coral, do not feed the animals, and leave all shells and plants right where you find them.

Boat excursion for snorkeling in spots protected from the massive tourist crowds. Beautiful! The coral, the multicolored fish, it was a real feast for the eyes :)
